Target dropped the ball on community – Recently I patronized the Target in Fridley on University Ave. I had volunteered for my 4th graders school to supply 200 bottles of soda pop for his school’s yearly festival. The pop was to be used for a ring toss game to generate funds for the school. Hundreds of participants would be involved.

After my cart already had about 30 six packs of various sodas in it, a rather unfriendly woman approached me and stated, “I have a limit of 20.” Not seeing any such posting, and not knowing what her point was, I responded that they could charge me full price, assuming she thought I was taking advantage of some sales price. She said, “That’s not the point. You will deplete my supply.” Notice how she personalized it, saying it was “her” supply and that “she” had a limit of 20. I explained to her that they were not for me, but for a local school. She was totally unsympathetic, refusing to make an exception. I said, “What would you suggest I do?” She asked if someone else could come in to split the purchase. Now, I’m no rocket scientist, but wouldn’t splitting the purchase with another customer still deplete the supply by the same amount? I explained that I had volunteered for this (at my own expense), and I was not going to inconvenience anyone in such a manner. She asked if I could come back the next day, and I said that the school was expecting the delivery that day, as the festival was the following day and they needed everything prepared at least one day in advance. Then she said that I could go to other Target Stores. By this time, I was tempted to leave my over-flowing cart with her and take my business to Cub, which is where I wound up going to complete my shopping.

Now, Target proclaims to be a champion of the local community. I think this woman dropped the ball so hard in this situation that she could have created a hole large enough to swallow a truck. It only occurred to me after leaving with my frustration that I should have suggested to her that Target donate the beverages to the school. I noticed on the school’s activity program in the area where they thanked local sponsors that two Cub Stores were mentioned as well as many local businesses. But there was no mention of any Target Stores. Hmm! I think you could be better served by people who have customer skills and judgment exceeding that sour employee’s poor aptitude and attitude.
