Disappointing Meal – My husband and I wanted to find a good German restaurant for my father-in-law's birthday, and Christl's of Palatine came highly recommended. We went at 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon. The place was quiet, which was nice, and we all enjoyed keeping up with the Cubs game on the TV by the bar. Our waitress was prompt and friendly; that's always nice.
The problem came with the food. The German items were fairly good, if not special, the exception being the breaded pork chop that my husband had, which was delicious. Once we ventured away from the German dishes, though, marked disappointment set in. I ordered chicken soup, which was made from a Knorr mix (I recognized the flavor and the noodles). I expected home made soup, not a package mix. The green beans my husband had tasted like they were from a can and over-boiled. The "hot bacon dressing" on the salad wasn't hot. My potato pancakes were burned, although they were edible because of the applesauce that came with them. The strudel may have been home made, but it was dry.
Another problem came because certain items hadn't been made in sufficient amounts to feed the customers. My husband was lucky enough to get the last breaded pork chop, but my mother-in-law and I both wanted rouladen and Christl's had run out. Our waitress commented that "everybody" orders rouladen, so they never have enough. My thought was: If it's the most popular dish on your menu and everybody wants it, why don't you make more? I think that running out of the customers' favorite dish is poor planning on the part of the staff.
We were very displeased with our visit. By the time the check and tip were paid we were out $100, and we certainly didn't get meals worth anything near that high a figure. We will not be going back.
Great local restaurant, great German food! – I love this restaurant!! Not a chain, run by a family, and wow does the grandmother know how to cook! I come from a very German family, and eating here reminds me of eating with family on Sundays. Sauerbraten was phenomenal, and the Wienerschnitzel was good as well. My fiancee said that the bratwurst was also good. HIGHLY recommend
If you like german food, this is your place!!! – Authentic, Authentic, Authentic. No fancy stuff here, just EXCELLENT, authentic, German food. Don't come here expecting polka bands and noise. This is a classic german restaurant. The service is excellent and the food is out of this world. I highly recommend the soups, schnitzel, and Oxtail if it is on the menu. Struedel is fantastic - completely made by hand. I could not give this place a higher recommendation. Prices are also VERY reasonable
good home cooked meals – If you are looking for someplace fancy this is not where you want to go. If you are looking for good food and a great value, then this is the place. The specials (lamb shank, shortribs, chicken schnitzel, etc.) are excellent and the goulash soup on saturday night reminds me of what i had in Budapest many years ago. All in all it's a great place with good food! It's a family freindly place.
Not a German restuarant – This is an American restuarant with German food. Out of three dushes, only one was delicious. The others were just average. The waitress was friendly, but over worked. We had trouble getting our water glasses filled. The "openers" were not German: the soup tasted like Dinty Moore's, the salad was not German, and the bread was ordinary.
I'M CRYING – I'LL MAKE THIS SHORT AND SWEET! THE SHORTRIBS AND SPAETZEL ALMOST MADE ME CRY. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE FOOD HERE YOU ARE EITHER MENTALLY DERANGED OR A CARD CARRYING MEMBER OF THE "McDONALDS CLAN". THE ONLY THING THAT SADDENED ME HERE WAS THE FACT THAT THE OWNERS WOULDN'T LET ME TAKE UP RESIDENCE.
Very authentic – The food is outstanding, I work for a German company and make the trip every once in a while across the pond and my meal here was just as authentic as I have had. The only thing lacking was a good selection of biers.
