H&B is cool............ – Okay I love the shrimp and I am from NOLA and it is okay. The bread pudding is not like my grandma's but, if you don't know what good pudding is then it is okay. The service is the worst especially if you get Terri's table. Pure g***to, slow and not one apology.....the asst manager is my buddy and if you are a female you get better drinks from the bar than the guys lol....
BEST Louisiana Food outside of New Orleans in Los Angeles area – Crawfish Ettufee appetizers and dinner are to die for. The chewiest crawfish..not dry. Bread pudding was good. But crawfish, bread, etc..WHEW!! Good...BUT..and there is a but...Pricey. Big plates, but -pricey. Appetizers range in the high teens. Great personalities at the restaurant. Very community atmosphere. Two people cost $120- and that's with 2 $10 drinks a piece. Pricey. But good.
Okay, but not worth the high price – I haven't been here in awhile but I do remember the food being really good. The problem with this place is that it is so small, you feel like you are eating with the whole restuarant and not just the people you came with. And the prices are really too high for the amount of food you receive. I love to eat and I have no problem with spending good money on good food. However, I do have a problem with not getting enough of what I order but plenty of stuff I can make at home (i.e. white rice). And the parking is absolutely the WORST. Now the parking and the size of the place can't be helped because as far as I can tell, there isn't any surrounding land to purchase so unless they are planning to move, at the very least, they could give you more of what you paid for.
Red Beans and Rice. – There is no other restaurant in Los Angeles that has Red Beans and Rice like Harold and Bell's. Always order them, with anything you order...you'll never be disappointed. I'd love to know how they make them. I would eat every night at this wonderful restaurant if I didn't care about my weight. The crab cake sandwich is to die for. The fish is unbelievably fresh and the the warm, cozy and inviting ambience makes coming to this establishment all worth the trouble of driving through the traffic to get there. I love the service and the servers (all of whom have been there forever) and the light and friendly attitude is contagious. I love the bar with locals hanging out and having a drink, watching a college or professional game of some sort and everyone cheering...very cool. This excellent 'comfort' food is just plain fabulous and consistent....I love this place because it never changes. I can count on it being the same every single time I go in. The portions are huge.
Every time I go with friends or family I feel like I've stepped into a New Orleans restaurant with the best food in town. An absolute gem of a restaurant in the middle of Los Angeles. What, seriously, could be better than that?
Good food, but pricey – I'm from down south, so maybe that's why I'm surprised at the prices of this place. I was told that it was an upscale soul food haunt, but I've never had to pay so much for a soul food dinner. Aside from the price though, the food was tasty and the portions are large. It's a nice place to go, but it might not be a great value.
I've tried better Cajun for half the price they charge at Harrold's and Belles – I love food. And for $30 a plate I expected Harrold's and Belles msut be amazing. The food was ok but it was not worth the price. I went with a group of 6 people and no one was happy with their food. I felt so bad I payed for everyones dinner since I chose the place. We had gone to the House of Blues to have dinner a few weeks earlier and we absolutely loved the food and the prices there were half what they charge at H & B and the plates are bigger. At H & B I ordered the jambalaya and got a small litte bowl with rice hardly any meat in sight. My friend ordered the Shrimp creole and she got 6 shrinps on top of a bunch of white rice same goes for the shrimp scampi. Not even the cajuned seasoned rice just plain white rice. My cousin ordered fried frog legs and they were just fried in plain batter there was nothing worth $30 for that plate. What happened to the Cajun Spices. I would not recommend this place at these prices. If you want Great Cajun, Huge servings without breaking your wallet I suggest the House of Blues in Sunset. The restaurant atmosphere at House of Blues add on to the Cajun theme. Enjoy
They spoiled our 10 year celebration! – Let me start by staying that I like the food at Harold and Belle's. Because I like the food, we made reservations for my book club which consisted of 20 women to go there and celebrate. Reservations were made way in advance. When we called to confirm the reservation and to discuss details for our 10 year celebration, they told us they gave our reservation away to a party of 8 people. When asked why, they told us that it was due to the fact that there was no deposit made so that the room technically was not ours. Trying not to go off, we informed the business that when the reservations were made, it was never mentioned that a deposit was needed and if so, that would have been taken care of.
Remember this is a celebration for 20 folks.
Well we tried to support black owned establishments and it is with this type of foolishness that you wonder why bother.
Exceptional customer service is what determines where I will spend my money.
Let me close by saying we took our celebration to El Chollo's. The bill was about $600.00. The waiter received a tip over 20% and everyone in the group was very happy with service, food and the fact they they were able to accomodate a large party at the last minute.
Great Food - Fun Dining Experience – Harold & Belles is one of my family's favorite restaurants. We especially enjoy the seafood combo. But be warned, the portions are huge. The seafood is never overcooked, is seasoned perfectly and is always fresh. We joke that they must have live fish swimming in tanks in the kitchen because that's just how fresh the seafood tastes. Yummy! I typically shy away from potato salad, but make an exception here. They do a pretty decent job on their potato salad. Their chowder is excellent! Not too thick, not to runny. Not overwhelmed with too many potatoes, and just the right amount of clams. You taste the delicate blend of celery and other spices used in the chowder.
The ambievance is always upbeat and fun. Lots of good energy. The service can be slow sometimes, but is consistently friendly. We've been going there for years, and have noticed they do not have high turnover with their servers.
The drinks are never watered down. As a matter of fact, they're pretty potent, but delicious. I'm not a big bread pudding fan, but have made an exception here. They actually do a really decent job on bread pudding!
Only drawback would be the parking. They do have valet parking, but it can get a little packed in at times. But the valet employees are always courteous and nice. Highly recommended, especially for big eaters and/or for large groups. Reservations are a must!
great food – I loved the food. The number on the listing is incorrect though. The actual # to Harold and Belle's is (323) 735-3376.
A neighborhood gem and if you love perfectly fried food this is it! Great atmosphere – In a neighborhood where one wonders if there are any good sit-down restaurants at all, Harold and Belle's is a gem. There is a prerequisite: you must not be on a diet or have any known heart blockages... The food is very tasty and don't even bother to avoid the fried stuff. If you don't eat fried food very often and you want to indulge, do it at this place because you will not regret it. We went on a weekday with reservations for four. We had clam chowder, crab cakes, spicy chicken winglets and soft shell crab entrees. The corn batter was perfectly crisp and tasty and the corn on the cob was also very good. The clam chowder borders too salty, but did not bother me much. Mashed potatoes were very rich and the red beans and rice even more so which is overwhelming for me, but may suit some. We didn't try any desserts because the portions are very huge and we were stuffed so if you have a sweet tooth, pace yourselves. Count on leftovers and don't see the entree price as a deterrent. This is fried food that actually did not give me any heartburn after which is a mark of artistry. I am a whole foods/farmer's market/eat healthy all week kind of person, so this place is a luxury I don't often enjoy. This is no greasy-spoon and there is a classy old-world feel to the place from another era. Atmosphere was relaxed and could also be a fun date place, especially on a live music night. Very old southern comfort. Staff is friendly and quick and the host was also very nice and warm. I will definitely return for lunch one of these days. Valet is convenient for busy nights.
