Citysearch Editorial Review – Every neighborhood in Seattle deserves to have a nice, quick place to drop in and get reasonably priced sushi, and for a long time, Sam’s was the only choice in Ballard. While many a newer joint has opened up, Sam’s has remained a stalwart with a dedicated clientele. The restaurant does the best possible with its rather unfortunate basement location, and does a good job, as you’ll barely realize how long you’ve been there when you head back up the stairs. The sushi tastes fresh, though don’t expect to be blown away by creativity. Sam’s plays by the rules and has all the classic sushi bar dishes on the restaurant. As the new, glamorous Ballard grows up around this basement establishment, locals will remember they can always come back here for a bit of grounding and a good meal.
Creative specials – The sushi chef at Sam's Sushi in Ballard is exercising his creative style to positive affect. Last night I had the special "Monkey Brain's". A tempura mushroom with several types of spicy fish and roe all cut in bite size pieces and arranged aesthetically on the plate with 4 pieces of nigiri. Very delicious.
Love this place! – My husband and I have been going to Sam's weekly for a year. The service is fantastic, and the sushi has always been really good. The miso soup is soooo good! The prices are reasonable. It is our favorite Ballard spot. We have gone to other sushi places in Seattle and elsewhere but we keep coming back to Sam's
great sushi at a reasonable price – I love this place! Every time I've gone to Sam's I've had really good sushi (fresh, big pieces) and the prices are really reasonable. I just took some friends visiting from out of town there the other night-- there were 4 of us and we stuffed ourselves silly with sushi and sake, and the bill was still less than $100! I've never been disappointed here. The service is good, the atmosphere is nice and casual, and the servers are friendly. What's not to like?
Won't go back! – My husband and I had high hopes for this place since we just moved here and had heard that Ballard had good restaurants. The sushi was not good, the combo plate my husband got had 5 pieces of lumpy, stringy sushi and it cost way more than it was worth. Overall, the sushi restaurants are terrible in Seattle and this one was the worst by far.
Nice Experience – I really don't understand the negative reviews. I just ate at this restaurant last night and had a great experience. I was seated immediately at the sushi bar even though it was the busy dining hour. Complimentary water and hot green tea were brought to me as soon as I sat down. All servers smiled at me. All orders were served fresh, delicious, and as requested with huge gobs of wasabi and ginger.
We need other japanese restaurant – I think there are Chinese making Japanese food,Food is bad,Service was'nt good also!
i love this place – so i lived right by sam's for a while and started going there and then have tried SO many sushi places in seattle since. we always seem to come back here. it's so good, the sashimi cuts are big and really delicious and all the rolls i've tried are awesome. i can't believe no one likes this place. i guess it's not for the people who don't really like sushi . . .
