Authentic Korean fare and English-challenged servers make for an urban dining adventure. – The Scene
Authentic ethnic dining--complete with language barrier--can recall the adventurous spirit of far-flung travels. Thus it is with bright, comfy-casual Il Song Jung, where inquiries regarding pork (they don't serve any, nor seafood, either) will get you a fork and a smile. When not busy, servers will cook for you on the gas grills inset into the tables.
The menu is brief, but every dish we sampled was fresh and authentic. For barbecue, only traditional bul ko ki (marinated beef) or kalbi (beef short ribs) are offered, served with a half-dozen bowls of kim chee but no lettuce for wrapping. The flour-and-egg batter pancake with scallions, squash and hot peppers is a killer app; bi bim bop (steamed vegetables with ground beef and a fried egg) in a sizzling stone bowl is a noteworthy rendition. Or try soft tofu in spicy soup, and chewy buckwheat noodles with radish, ground beef and pickles. Brief bar offerings are limited to three varieties of beer, bottles of soju (a rice-barley version of the Korean liquor), and bottles of Dewar's.
