Great pizza! – This place is tiny but great! HOwever, for the top 10 best pizza places in NYC https://files.nyu.edu/jdy215/public/
Lower EastSide Treasure – Apizz is one those restaurants that you feel like you have discovered and can't wait to tell friends about. It's a cozy, one story place on Eldridge Street with phenomenal food. I took my girlfriend there on Thursday night and went back with my parents on Sunday and it was the perfect place for both. The meatballs are the best I have had in the city...my girlfriend loved the lamb chops. Check it out!
do not enter – If i could have published this review with less than 1 star, I would have. I have never been treated with such disrespect from a restaurant manager. Unfortunately I arrived 15 minutes past my reservation time and was scolded for being late and told that my table had been given away. Then, instead of offering to have us wait at the bar until the next table became available (like any other host in the city would have done) we were given the cold shoulder and told maybe there would be something available in 45 minutes. Although we did not feel particularly welcome we took it upon ourselves to put our names back on the list and go to the bar. After waiting patiently for 45 minutes, our unfriendly manager reluctantly visited us and said he could probably seat us downstairs, but if we wanted to wait for an upstairs table it would be a lot longer of a wait. Since we had never stated a preference and he made the downstairs sound incredibly unappealing, I asked if there was some reason we shouldn't dine downstairs. He mumbled something about it being for walk-ins and as he was clearly becoming increasingly irritated with our presence, we went ahead and asked him why he was being so rude and unaccommodating to us... at which point he said he no longer had any tables available for us and we could leave. so we did.
*Even though I had made a reservation and confirmed that morning, we were told that people make reservations there all the time on weekends and don't show up so they seat whoever shows up, so if you dare to make a reservation here, don't expect them to honor it*
Great Food, Great Atmosphere! – Celebrated my birthday last week with my wife at Apizz! The atmosphere was nice and cozy especially on a cold winter night. There is a huge brick oven fire in the back. Not many tables. It's great for small groups or just with your spouse. The food was fabulous. Had the ravoilli with butternut squash and my wife had the gnocchi with beef. Both dishes were so tasty. They added a lot of butter so that's why it was so good! Not good if you are on a diet! Ordered a bottle of wine. Desert was good as well. Had two by accident! The service was right on point. It wasn't that crowded being on a week night and in the midst of a rain storm but it filled up quickly as the night went on. Great place to snuggle with your other half. I would highly recommend coming here. We had a great table in the back corner so very comfortable! The location is not the greatest. It's kind of out there in the middle of nowhere but only about 2 blocks from the train station.
Go for the food and the ambiance – I have been a long time diner at Apizz. The food is consistently hearty and delicious. I would recommend the Gnocchi and the Lasagna. I was not impressed with the Octopus Salad, so I would stick with the pizza to start or even just the fresh crusty bread they bring to the table. They have a healthy wine list to boot. I would highly recommend trying this little LES spot.
Pizza ok; avoid any time; terrible customer service – 3 pizza choices does not qualify as a Pizza restaurant. Food quite good but overpriced for the 'hood. If you like paying for a decorator you won't mind the prices. Service was the piece de resistance. Every 3 minutes a bus boy asks if you are finished or your waitress comes over and asks how everything is. The wait staff has never been trained that people dine out to speak to each other and not to be interruputed constantly.
The best part is the manager who when told of the intrusions never blinked nor said a word. If you want a good pizza go to Cronkites a couple of blocks away or to one of a thousand other much better Italian restaurants in the city. You want quiet and romance - stay home!
I have only been here once but I would go back – The restaurant was empty so they sat two of us at a four-top, which was nice. The white pizza with spinach was delicious. The gnocci tasted fresh. The service was friendly.
Worth at least one visit... – I returned a 2nd time with my parents and brother for a family dinner. With the family, we sampled more of their foods. The restaurant is nice, dim but well lit (we made reservations for 7pm in June). It is within a residential neighborhood that is contrary to the clients that dine at Apizz.
They are known for cooking most of their dishes in their wood burning stove oven. We ordered 3 appetizers and 4 entrees, sharing all family style. For the appetizers, we ordered the warm octopus salad, antipasto plate and polenta cakes with wild mushrooms. The appetizers were plenty for 4 people to share especially with the antipasto plate, check their website for a full description. For the main course, we ordered the whole fish roasted in the oven served with lemon and a very fruity flavorful olive oil, lasagna with braised wild boar ragu, and their famous giant meatballs filled with ricotta cheese, and gnocchi with braised short rib
The fish was a bit on the dry side but good - not worth the $$$ as indicated on their menu.
The braised wild boar ragu lasagna was ok. It was kind of sad looking lasagna, not really piled high with pasta and meat.
The meatballs (two lady's fist size were served) was a bit dry and not really filled with ricotta. The cookbook gives a different set of instructions from what was actually served. I was expecting the ricotta cheese to be oozing and overflowing. Also, I didn't think the chef's meat proportions made it anything special or different tasting from what I have made on my own.
And we were too full to eat the gnocchi so we took it home and I had it for lunch the next day - really good but not enough meat for the price.
Dessert, we ordered the apple crumble and amaretto ice cream. It was ok, not outstanding.
Our overall dining experience was ok - attentive service, a bit on the pricey side for food that wasn't inspirational. It's worth one visit if you haven't been, and if you're in the neighborhood.
Excellent pizza, lasagna and gnocci and great service too!!! – I've been here three times for the last 6 months and I must say I love this place! The location is not great but this is truly a gem, I wish they open one close to midtown area! Their staff, Diego, was always very helpful and accommodating. I took my friends here for a b-day dinner and another time just to hang out...and each time they gave us complimentary desserts, it was awesome! Plus when I didn't like the bottle of wine that we ordered, he was quick enough to offer the wine list, apologized and told us to pick another bottle that we like. Now, that's great service! I will come back again.
