Worst night out ever – What happened? We live in Houston and usedto go to Elysium for a great, unique, kinky night out amongst other alt/goth types. God only knows there's few enough places for this type of night! However, we used to be able to count on coming to Austin on a weekend and having a great time out on Friday or Saturday at Elysium. No more, I guess.
We showed up around 11:15 on Friday June 25th, paid the cover and went in. The town was jumpin' just like always! However, inside the club - NO-ONE. there was a TERRIBLE band playing on the stage, with ONE GUY standing in the middle of the dance floor have an epileptic seizure. NO ONE ELSE in that side of the club at all! We went over and got drinks from the usual lousy bar staff (we were expecting this), and sat down in the pool table area. There were a couple of really skeevy folks playing pool...and that's it. We drank our drinks for about 30 minutes waiting for something to happen. We went over to see if the band would "grow on us" - they got worse. A couple of people came in, stood for 3 minutes, then left. We went back over and finished watching the subtitled episode of family Guy on the pool area TV, laughed a little, then left at 12:15.
What a waste! Will never plan to attend there again.
Anybody else know any good Goth bars??
Worst gothic club of all time – I read rave reviews about Elysium. It is the worst nightclub that I've ever been to in my life. This nightclub has a mediocre sound system. The DJ plays songs that are hit and miss. And that makes it hard to get a dance stride going.
The ambiance is the worst. This club looks like the inside of a run-down trailer in Arkansas. The 60s era furniture and sofas are obviously from thrift stores. The dance floor is too small and too crowded. The regular crowd look incredibly boring, uncreative, and un-Gothic. Most of them look like social rejects and losers They should be ashamed of themselves for calling themselves a Gothic club or the Gothic scene. There isn't anything Gothic about this club except for a few weird looking criminal types that hang out on the smoking patio. The people are very pretentious and they think they are so cool. They clearly don't own mirrors nor do they have critical thinking. And what is so bad is they charge you to go in. They actually have a cover charge for this disaster of a nightclub.
The restrooms at Elysium are in horrible shape. And you wouldn't want to ever have to use the restroom in them. I was scared to even comb my hair in the cracked restroom mirror. Hopefully they have at least fixed up the restroom since my last visit to Elysium.
If you want to see what a real Gothic nightclub looks like then please evaluate the websites of The Church at The Lizard Lounge and Excuses Extreme Cafe up in Dallas,Texas. That is true Gothic and retro.
Amazing music, but WAY too much smoke – Elysium is the only goth club in Austin (as far as I know), and the only club which caters to my musical/dancing tastes (goth, retro, etc.) My one problem is that the owner chooses to ignore the smoking ban completely, so the club always ends up really smoky. I'm severely allergic to cigarette smoke, so every time I go, I am sick for at least a day afterwards. If the owner would simply obey the law and enforce the smoking ban, I would be there at least once a week to dance.
Best Goth Club – Elysium is great! They have the best shows! This Friday (10/3/2008) is Awaken by Hipnautica and I can't wait!!!!!!
Best Dancing for Retro Night! – Sundays are a flash back in time! You would think it was Halloween with everyone dressed up in retro attire. The music does not disappoint either. An all around non-stop good time. The place usually gets hopping by around 11-11:30. DJ Pumpkin actually plays requests as well!
Most Awesome 80s night and cool, dark dance place to hang – Ok, I'm biased because I met my boyfriend standing in line there at sxsw, but I love Elysium. Yes it is a goth, underground type of bar, but the coolest thing about it is that it doesn't matter what your style or fashion is, if you are there for the music and vibe, no one makes you feel like you don't fit in or shouldn't be there (I'm not very Goth and feel perfectly comfortable). The 80s nights on Wednesdays and Saturdays are to die for, because DJ Pumpkin Spice always spins those unusual, more alternative 80s hits in addition to the regular hits that EVERYONE is familiar with. The bartenders rock and always treat you right, if you show up more than once, they will remember you and say hello. John, the owner, is very cool and you can tell he is totally devoted to keeping a place for all us misfits to hang out (and I mean misfit in a positive, cool way).
One-stop Goth, from fetish fashion shows to underground live music. – In Short
Touted as Austin's industrial and gothic haven, the label does not soon disappoint the eclectic Red River crowd. This particular location has hosted a number of underground dance clubs, and although the district is now on the map, risqué opportunity is still on the menu at Elysium. The Elysium serves up a variety of dance-themed nights, including retro '80s and underground. Live music events are limited to gothic, industrial, synth-pop, ebm and electronica genres.
