Truedell_Michel – The servers/ bartenders are the BEST in Houston. And the food is even better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When ever we are in Houston we stop in. We highly recommend everybody eating here, Maria Selma's has something for everyone...
I really wanted to like this place – A group of co-workers and friends meet after work for drinks/dinner weekly. We tried Maria Selma six times. They started out great! Good food, good atmosphere! We objected to the extra charge for an extra basket of chips. With 9 drinkers & eaters in our party, we told them NO WAY was that acceptable. We weren't charged. But requests for jalapenos, onions, sour cream hit you with an extra charge. What finally crossed them off our list was the weak margaritas. We ordered by the pitcher, and asked that they be made stronger. When the waitress said that wasn't possible, we realized they use a premixed margarita. It's too bad. I'm willing to try again, but the others disagree. There are too many other places to try. Once you lose us, we don't go back.
overrated – yesterday in the hou chron a renowned chef said this place was excellent, so i decided to check it out. decor was beautiful, place was clean, menu seemed promising. but the waitress came about 1/2 dozen times before we were ready to order -- before we had closed our menus, and once the food came she was nowhere to be found. she had to be asked for a tea refill, and then she didn't even put ice in it. i ordered what the quoted chef had recommended (crab-stuffed avocado), but it was way too salty and the crab was not sufficiently picked-over. the salsa was good, but more like mole than salsa. then the waitress tried to charge us for something we didn't order. i think this place is fairly new (it used to be instant karma), so maybe it'll get better with age....
Offering more than the usual Tex-Mex, this Montrose eatery takes adventurous diners south of the border. – The Scene
In a city riddled with hundreds of Mexican restaurants, trying to stand out can be a real challenge. Maria Selma gives it a good try by augmenting the usual Tex-Mex standards with a handful of interesting dishes from Mexico City. Colorful and energetic (without sinking into franchise kitschiness), the room is comfortably designed and diners who like their elbow room should appreciate the spacious layout of tables and chairs. A new patio area is a welcome addition for those who enjoy their margaritas alfresco.
The adventurous will check out novelties like chicharron en salsa verde (pork rinds in tomatillo sauce), shredded duck taquitos and a grilled steak with nopalitos (cactus)--all enticing, if unfamiliar, flavors. Less winning are a pepper-flecked cream cheese appetizer (queso endiablado) and the guajillo-sauced enchiladas which were too intense to finish. Hardly unusual, but a good value, are the tortas--hefty, two-handed sandwiches.
Maria Selma – This restaurant was recommended by a friend who had a decent previous experience there. Once the three of us sat down, it took 10 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. Only to return with one of the drinks in a dirty glass (there was lipstick on the rim). When this was pointed out, the waitress hesitately when we asked her for a new one. The food was BLAND, the chips and salsa (and I use the SALSA term LOOSELY) were horrible, and dont expect any extras like pico, guacamole, sour cream or even jalepanos without paying at least a buck for each one since they dont come with the meal. We complained to the manager, and he was filled with attitude. A huge waste of time and money.
Love the Margaritas & Patio – This has got to be one of the best patios in Houston. Happy hour prices are great, and the selection is vast. Food is good, too.
Bland Food, Bad Service – The salsa was boring and we were told it couldn't be spiced up. The mole verde was absolutley tasteless. What turned me off was the service. There were three of us. When other eateries were packed with their brunch crowd, Selma was practically empty. The waitress sauntered over after a while to take our drink orders. When one person asked what bloody Mary mix they used, she snapped, "I don't know, I'm not the bartender!" and did not try to find out. It took a long time to get our food and we had to flag down someone to order more drinks. It was another lengthy wait to have our plates cleared and get our check. As we left, there were three employees gathered around the door, talking amongst themselves. No one spoke to us. No, "thank you, please come again," no nothing. That's OK, we will not be returning.
