Now bad food to go with bad service – We went in for lunch and the food was by far and away the worst food I have ever been served in any resturant in my life. Orderd the taco plate the waiter had no idea what I was talking about got a hard shell taco (kind you buy in the store) that had some wilted lettuce and the chicken that comes in a can naaasty!!! My wife's order they forgot to put the beef on it...The best part was when checking out a customer forgot something at there table and while the waiter was bringing it out to them the owner that was taking my money started calling them cabrones and a couple of other choice mexican adjectives...gives you a pretty good idea of what they think of the american customers. I have a home in Mexico and can say without a doubt I have had better food at Taco smell.
Good food horrible service. – While El Gordo's food is very good.... their service is almost unbelievably bad.
The waiters that work there..plain and simply just don't get it.
They are incredibly rude.
To give you an example..the last time that i was there, i asked for some more chips and salsa...the waiter actually started to argue with me.
I told him that i would pay extra...needless to say he charged me and extra $2 for them.
While this was going on, there was a couple sitting on the other side of the restaurant.
The gentleman had to step outside for a minute..while he was away..a different waiter proceeded to hit on his girlfriend while he was gone.
I actually bring people there periodically, because the food is good...but mostly to witness the insanity of the waiters that work there.
Just to let everybody know...I am always very polite with my servers..and I always tip them a minimum of 20%....everywhere that i dine.
Still pretty good food, rude service – I have been dining at El Gordo for more than 10 years and have always enjoyed the food, fast, but good and always adequate service. I say that because they were aways friendly but didn't speak great English. After the restaurant switched to new owners and remodeled, I notice that service was not nearly as friendly, bordering on rude. I think the new owner and staff do not speak very good English at all. There are many, many places to eat in the area and I am, after all these years, going to avoid El Gordo or learn to speak better Spanish. :-)
Emy101 – Very good food and good service too much food. Kids food ok need tostadas as a regular menu item. Would recommend to anyone.
Great Restaurant!!!! – My girlfriend and I always go to this place for dinner. Everything we have ordered has been delicious. We typically can't finish, due to the large portions and frequent chips and salsa dip refills (I highly recommend the cheese dip too), and get to have leftovers for lunch the next day. The waiter/owner is awesome.
In reference to a previous review; when my girlfriend pays he teases me about her buying in a joking manner with a huge smile on his face and no disrespect intended. Why would he care who pays the bill! We will continue to visit El Gordo frequently, and recommend it to anyone we can!
Que Horrible! – Went here on a Saturday for a light lunch. I Ordered a beef tamale. I should have been covered with ground beef and other goodies according to the menu. WHat I got was a chicken tamale with red sauce. When I brought it up with the server/owner he said that sometimes they dont have the beef so they serve the chicken. After I told he he should tell me that when I order he was offended and started an uncomfortable argument in his store. I asked him to leave the table.
He came back and said that "he understood my complaint" and there would be no charge". Duh. I never saw him again.
The food is less authentic then a Taco Johns as well.
Never EVER eat here. The staff is the rudest that I have ever experienced and the food is not at all impressive.
Worse Service Ever. Worse Attitude Ever. – Food.......okay. Service..........bad bad bad. One of the worse experience ever. The server is an ignorant hispanic. I am Asian, went to this restaurant with my fiance who is Caucasian. We had a big breakfast earlier the day and was shopping at the Knollwood Mall. Wanted just a light lunch. We walked in and he brought out a basket of chips and salsa. We ordered two softdrinks and subsequently ordered one taco and a burrito. The server walked away with a comment "you just wasted my time." We blew off the comment and finished our food. He got us the check, I gave my fiance a $10 bill. A minute later, she handed the $10 bill and the bill to him. He commented, "I guess the ladies pay in the United States." I confronted him about the comments. He mumbled in Spanish and he did not denied the comment he made, but he didn't gave me an answer neither. He went on and gave me the change and said, "take your change and never come back again". My fiance and I did not do a thing to him to deserve this kind of treatment!! We felt totally discriminated against because we are the only interracial couple within the restaurant.
If you go to this restaurant, guys, be prepared to pay or expect a nasty comment from the server because he can't deal with having the women paying in the United States!! Or if you are going there for just a snack or drink, DON'T border, you are just wasting his time!
Horrible Service! – I've been to El Gordo several times as I live in the neighborhood. As others mentioned, the food is decent and cheap. I will strongly disagree about the "friendly service" however. First off, the staff barely speaks any English so it makes it very difficult to communicate. Most recently, I orded a combination of enchiladas and a taco, and was served a hard taco rather than soft. I politely asked our server if I could have a soft instead of a hard, his reply was "no, you didn't order a soft". I apologized and said I still would like one, he picked up my plate and started swearing under his breath as he stormed into the kitchen. Everyone in this tiny place heard and saw all of this, and were as appalled as I was. We promptly got up and left, and will never return again under any circumstances. I'm making all my friends, neighbors, and co-workers know about my experience there and to avoid at all costs.
Great food!!! great takeout – i am few blocks away from this place and stopped by with doubts in my mind if its any good. but i was very surprised with the food and service....it was really good....the ppl was very nice and welcoming...food is very cheap....awesome takeout...i wouldnt take a date there since its a bit fast food style..but great for taking food home...love it!!
Best in the West – My wife and I had been to El Gordo's a couple of times, and it was okay but nothing to drive out of the way for. However, that changed dramatically.
In 2008, El Gordo's went under new management. Now, my wife and I go there almost weekly. Great prices and great food. My wife's favorite is the Enchiladas Rancheras with the pork. My favorite is the Enchildas Verdes, which they will kick up a notch if you ask. We've had several things on the menu, and all are excellent.
My wife thinks they might use a little coconut milk in the rice, because it is creamy good--unlike most "mexican rice" you find. The refried beans are excellent as is the guacamole served with several of the dishes. Kids are free on Sunday, and so far when we've been in there the kids have been good... probably the food.
Service is friendly and prompt. Decor is simple and the establishment is clean and pleasant. Were the restaurant fancier they could certainly charge more for the food because it can't be beat in the western suburbs.
