Well worth it!! – I have to disagree with the summaries written already. I went there for my birthday last year and had a wonderful time. The food was absolutely delicious; they weren't large portions, but were fully satisfying. Our table was right by the stage where two singers and full band were playing wonderful Latino music all night long. Later in the night a salsa teacher came and taught some steps, and then the tables opened up and everybody danced for hours on end (don't sit in the middle or you'll be moved right when you finish eating.) The ambience was perfect, dim lights and rich colors, and the people were dressed very well. Overall a wonderful experience!
River North Nuevo Latin restaurant features a breezy, comfortable atmosphere and dancing on weekends. – Big red upholstered booths, mustard walls, and an exposed wood-beam ceiling set a sophisticated mood in this River North room, where a live band plays Latin jazz for a buzzing crowd of well-to-do, 30-something diners. It's a comfortable, elegant space. The Latin fusion menu features dishes like coconut and plantain-encrusted sea bass, rib eye with ancho pepper sauce and broiled rack of lamb with a sangria glaze.
Disappointing – I made reservations a week in advance and when I arrived they didn't have a table ready for us. That is why reservations are made right? The food is not that great and for what they charge is not worth it. The only positive thing about this place is the live band, they play wonderful.
Rude Staff – Rumba was a great place to dance until recently. It is very, very crowded now and the once upscale clientel is gradually turning trashy. Door staff is always, without fail, extraordinarily rude and unpleasant. Bar staff is fair-sometimes nice, usually detached.
Despite the fact that this was a top destination for me for many months, the constant poor treatment has finally caught up. I'll never return there.
Just plain sad – I'm sorry to say this is the worst restaurant I've been to in Chicago. From the disappointing service to the lack of flavor in the entrees, Rumba just plain misses the mark. The owners should take some notes from disappointed customers like myself.
Bad experience – I had a terrible experience at Rumba. Our waiter was in space, the food was cold when we received it, and I was extremely disappointed with the service. I would not recommend.
Rumba Right Past This Place – I have NEVER been to a resturant so poorly run with service so obviously BAD. This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. We waited forever for service, our water glasses were never refilled, the wine bottle was empty halfway through dinner and we were never offered more or any other type of drinks for that matter. The food was okay, but nothing to recommend. When we asked for management to complain, the manager was actually worse than the server!
Horrible Experience – I've never been to a restaurant that is more mis-managed, or more lacking in proper service. An absolute diaster. Server would disappear for 20 or 30 minutes--we would finally have to track them down, even though the restaurant was empty! The owner came over to apologize but still charged us full price after the waiter brought out the wrong dishes (apparently he wrote the wrong order numbers down). Ruined our visit to Chicago. We will never be back to this restaurant again.
I think this place is great – I really like Rumba. Their food is delicious and I have never had anything but professional, attentive service each of the 5 or more times I have eaten here. For lunch or dinner all of their selections are delicious. I really like the vegetable sandwich topped with the goat cheese, one of my favorites. And, the atmosphere lends itself well to professional business lunches or a cozy night out. The way they transformed the space after Hubbard Street Grill is great.
Totally Fabulous – I had the pleasure of experiencing Rumba for a company party and I loved it. The look, the food, the staff is wonderful. I especially loved Marta the catering director, she made everyone feel comfortable and was a pleasure to meet. I will be recommending Rumba to everyone I know.
