LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO PLAY – SO I think this place has gotten a bad rap from the previous experiences with The Nocturnal Bar. It's now called Trip and yes the name changes are annoying but at least the change is for the better. The new owner is way beyond fair with every band that plays there. Not only does the bar take zero from the door, drinks liberally flow if the crowd is descent. IT's got a new sound system and you can see that they actually care about this place. It's a great place to come and see what local bands can do. There is rarely a cover and if there is it's cheap. Drink prices are low, as in the cheapest on the westside. All artist who dealt with the old owners with the bad sound system should reconsider. As a local musician myself I have had nothing but great times there and have been treated with respect.
Nocturnal Bar's owner Neil and managers are not honest and do not do what they say they will do. – Bands and artists beware - I enjoyed playing at Nocturnal Bar many times but then one night the owner Neil and manger stiffed our whole band and crew on the payment after they promised to pay us for playing at the venue. We had a huge turnout, brought multiple bands, (with photos and video to prove it) and they still did not pay the band the money they promised. They promised us the money that night in writing but we have not seen it for months now. The owner keeps saying that he will send us the payment but we never get it. Some of the excuses are that he is selling the bar, they don't have any money, and they will pay when they get it. I now see Neil driving a new car which seems strange. They had been paying their bill until this night. We had to request the promised band drink tickets a few times each time we played and it was always a struggle with the door and our guest lists that the bar promised us. We have cancelled all of our other shows at Nocturnal Bar because of this situation and we will not play or visit there again. After playing hundreds of venues we have never had a problem like this with an owner. I even explained that my father just passed away and we needed any help we could get but this did not seem to make any difference at all. I still paid the band members for playing. The really funny thing is that Neil the owner reached out to us to play, we had to give him a bar guarentee, and now when he owes us the money he can't pay it. Very dishonest and many people witnessed this. The whole band and community is thinking about taking this to the city of Santa Monica.
Also the vodka the bar tender is talking about is really just "Japanese vodka" or Sake and they don't have much selection of drinks. Also, just so you know the last time I was there they had a "B" on their front door and they don't even serve food! This really made me laugh.
Good vibe. Good people. – Its a dive bar, pure and simple, but a good one. The red and black decor does seem to want to be hipster, but its not quite so pretentious.
I am not sure what the previous reviewer knows what he's talking about. The soju stuff is still there. It tastes pretty good, but I cant really drink it because it gives me a massive headache.
I go pretty often and there isnt any comedy night that I have ever seen.
There are alot of bands on the weekend. I've seen some really good ones and some bad ones. If youre ever there and have a chance to catch a local band called "Meet me at the Pub" you should definitely stick around. They are pretty great (if you like the Dub, Sublime-ish type music).
One of the drawbacks for me is that the nights are not consistent. One friday theres a rock band. The next friday you go and its a hip-hop DJ. Youre never really sure what youre going to get.
I've met the owner. He's a nice guy. He's got good energy and you can tell he's putting in alot of effort trying to build the place up. Not sure he'll make it. Its a tough location.
This place has a great staff. It's not the stuffy, corporate, big chain type of bar. The bartenders are friendly, talkative, and overall, just nice people. I have a good time hanging out, chatting, while I have a beer or two. Visit a couple of times and youre on a first name basis. Agatha is my favorite bartender.
Take a second to stop by, if youre in the area. You should give it a shot.
Its MY local beer dive.
Not the bitter red anymore!!! – Follow me, Bitter red head to Bitter end to The Loop to Nocturnal. The bar has been ripped out and replaced with a starter bar kit. The japanese soju is gone and only beer and wine remain. The place has several cocktail tables, one pool table and one video game machine. This place doesn't know what it wants to be / or wants to be something that it isn't - a hollywood hipster bar. First hint, the jack in the box / 'hotel' / homeless people wandering lincoln blvd. second, crappy bathrooms. third, crappy live acts ie - comedy nough said?
Great Hidden Dive Bar – Perfect for a sunday night if you like darts and disco lighting. Excellent martinis and great atmosphere . Worth the stop along lincoln.
The Redhead Strikes Again!! – Only one word could possibly describe The Bitter Redhead.....Scrumtulescent. The staff is friendly, the music is fantastic (both jukebox and djs), and the patrons are a complete grab bag. Every time I go there, I meet some interesting character who can keep my attention until we hear "last call". So, in summation, go to the Bitter Redhead, then leave, but come back again. In a city with eleventy thousand bars, it's the right choice.
Quirky Santa Monica neighborhood bar with popular theme nights devoted to sports, music and comedy. – The Scene
Tucked into a discreet corner on bustling Lincoln Boulevard, this tiny dive serves up the unpretentious vibe of a low-key locals spot. The decor is no-frills frat house: unfinished floors, dark-red walls, neon Budweiser signs and shabby leather couches. With beers in hand, regulars enjoy friendly competition via pool, poker, darts and video games. Though the crowd consists mainly of die-hard sports fans, the occasional Westside scenester charmed by the bar's droll name will often wander in.
Wednesdays are the bar's signature comedy night, featuring up-and-coming talent. Tuesdays highlight offbeat cover bands and their boisterous fans, among them, Monica Lewinsky and members of Wilco. Fridays are karaoke nights, which is popular with the local after-work crowd. Football reigns supreme on Mondays, when regulars are glued to one of the two big-screens.
Best Bar in LA – ...If you are into a really cool place to hang out on any give night, have a few beers, and just relax with friends and play games, this is the place. I lived in SantaMonica for 6 months, within walking distance to this bar, and my boyfriend and I both loved it. We are now on a first name basis with all the bartenders and both the owners. Craig if you read this, Mike and Jess say hi! Anyway...we live in Boston now and have been hard pressed to find a var we both like so much. I hope everyone that reads this will go check it out. And I highly recommend the darts with a pint of Stella. :-)
"CHEERS" Bar in Santa Monica – At last, the perfect merger of 'Cheers' additude, So-Cal beach ambiance, and grungy dive style!Walking into The Bitter Redhead you almost imagine that the bartender will call out your name in greeting. The friendly crowd is mostly young locals (good looking gene pool) who will probably adopt you into the group before your first drink is finished. I highly recommend Thursdays - Sports Trivia Night, and Sundays for Steak Night - $9 gets you a tender filet and sides.
Destined to become your favorite nightspot.
Great bar! – This was just the kind of bar I was looking for. Not too crowded, great music on the juke box (erasure, tracy chapman, nirvana), and plenty of pool and darts. Great drinks also. Highly recommended if you want somewhere to just kick back and have a good time.
