One of the interesting – I wandered into Virayoga on a trip to NYC and it happened to be a "Community Class" taught by Dana Lewis. She was welcoming to someone from out of town and had fun talking Anusara with her. Great teacher and a wonderful urban space. This is a studio that I would make a Yoga home if I lived in NYC.
Yoga without oxygen – After reading the above review, I decided to check out Virayoga. The stuffy smelly air hits your face as soon as you get off the elevator at 11th floor. It gets more intense inside the classroom. This was not bikram yoga, but without the extremely noisy AC it felt like it. And if they turn the AC on, then it's really not relaxing with all the noise. The class was too crowded with no air circulation. For $17, there are much better yiga enviroments around this area. Never going back there again!
User review by yuelin78 – I really wanted to try out this place but due to my busy schedule, I wanted to call first and speak with someone and find out a few things before I actually went. They have a phone number so I called to find out rates and some other information because I have some special medical conditions, but I can't ever get anyone on the phone. There is not even an option to speak to anyone, just voice mails. This really annoying to me because I just have simple questions and would like to speak to a human but it seems impossible. Why do they even have a phone. It gives me a bad impression because on one can take the time to answer a phone call, what will it be like if I'm a student there.
This Anusara practice is heart-based in more ways than one: It facilitates compassion while strengthening your cardiorespiratory system. – The Scene
You can tell instructor Elena Brower has a devoted following. Her questions about whether a particular pose encourages the muscles to spiral in or out can be met with a choral response from her regulars. That unified focus on the part of her students combined with the specificity of her gentle-but-firm direction turns this visually unremarkable L-shaped space into one of NYC's most invigorating yoga centers. Despite an ad hoc unisex dressing area and bathrooms out in the hall, Virayoga attracts large, enthusiastic classes.
Unlike many yoga studios, which bypass the spiritual component and concentrate on the strictly physical, Brower's method--in line with the form's co-founder Professor Douglas Brooks--opens a side door to the soul through the incorporation of Tantric philosophy. Challenging asanas are complemented by erudite commentary that reminds you to be compassionate to yourself and to the world. Rest assured this is tough love, though.
Virayoga is bank! – Vira is amazing. The teachers are so precise and forceful with their instruction, but at the same time warm, inviting and accessible. Perfect mix of spirit-balancing philosophy and a butt-kicking workout. Plus the space is beautiful, especially when the light comes through the huge west facing windows. I'm reluctant to say anything "changes" my life, but this changed my life. Put the Prozac and Zoloft away and head to 580 broadway!
Elena rocks! – I have studied yoga with Elena Brower for nearly 2 years now and find her and the Virayoga staff to be among the best! This is not pretentious, snooty yoga, nor does it take itself too seriously. Elena focuses on anusara yoga and while she and staff do address the spiritual side of yoga without being freaks, make no mistake - you butt will get kicked. A very well-balanced approach and study.
