Cute Place, Very Political, Okay Cut – The Funky Monkey is a really cute salon in a cozy building near Duke University. My stylist was really nice and the shampoo was delightful. My cut was just okay. She thinned it and now I am having trouble with too thin hair around my ears. Also it's not even left to right. I wanted something a little more edgy and I tried to communicate that but the style I got still makes me look traditional. The worst thing though is how political the salon is. I don't pay $50.00 to be reminded about someone else's political views. I view a haircut as a little pleasure and when I pay this much it's an indulgence. To have it ruined by politics was a shame. I won't go back or recommend it to others.
Great Studio, Great Stylist – Was recommended this hair salon by a couple friends and was able to get an appointment very soon after I called. I had Heather as a stylist and she was fantastic! She was super attentive and friendly and had a lot of great advice for my hair. She cut and styled according to my preferences and was really helpful in suggesting hair products. Heather was also really easy to talk to and made it an overall great hair salon experience!
I would absolutely recommend this salon and Heather to others!
Alexis is AWESOME!! – The receptionist is very friendly and accomodating. I have always been treated great, as have all of the people I have referred. (I had read earlier reviews about some rude guy who WAS the receptionist, but he was apparently let go.)
Alexis has cut, colored, and styled my hair at least 5 times, and she does a great job each time. She listens carefully to my wishes, and she is very precise. When she cuts my hair, it maintains the style for several weeks. She is truly an artist.
I have never had difficulty getting in for an appointment. Alexis is great about offering options, but she doesn't pressure you to buy expensive products. She is AWESOME! I have been to several other quality salons in the Durham area, and Alexis at Funky Monkey is by FAR my favorite. (I'm almost afraid to post this because she might get really booked now and hard to get in with.)
The salon is very clean, nicely appointed, and the products that they sell are good quality and priced reasonably.
Sandi is hands down amazing! – I have always been one of those people who dreads a haircut. They have never been good experiences and tears would roll- that is, until I found Sandi. Sandi has a wonderful eye for style, not to mention the fact that she has a great sense of humor. She really talks to me about things that would work with my hair texture, my face and how much time I want to be spending on my hair. She makes some suggestions about different ways to try a new cut but is not pushy about it. She also really understands curly hair and different textures. She is always considerate of how something might look growing out and she doesn't make me feel bad about not being able to get to the salon when I technically need to. I loved her so much I had my boyfriend get his hair cut with her and she makes him look amazing every time. I have tried many hair salons all over the triangle but I make a trip out of my way to get to Durham to see Sandi. She is the only person I trust with my hair and that is saying a lot!
GO SEE HEATHER! LOVE THE FM! – I moved to North Carolina months ago and had yet to find a salon that provided me with the atmosphere, skill, and price that I wanted to find in a salon. EUREKA! I stumbled upon the Funky Monkey and the axis of the earth itself shifted. The atmosphere was all the rage, and Kala at reception was just LOVELY. Such a polite demeanor and it was easy to get an appointment. After that my experience was enhanced, more still! I had the pleasure of having Heather as my stylist. The hair wash she gave me was OrGaSmIc. She was easy to chat with, and made sure that I was choosing the *right* cut for moi. She edged up the style that I had in mind, and it's super effin cute!
ANGELA'S MOVED!?! – Ahhhhh!!!! Tried to make an appointment with my hair guru and she's no longer at FM! After some research I found out she's still in Durham *sigh of relief* at Hot Headz on Broad Street. Meltdown averted.
Best Stylist Ever – Angela is a gem. I've seen Angela, one of FM's stylists, through 5 or 6 different hairstyles now, and she's absolutely the best. I'm the kind of person who experiments with different styles, but whether I've wanted it short, natural and classy, or long but punk-rock, she's done it all. And she's an expert with color: I've gone from dark brown to blond to red with her, and it's always flattering -- she really knows what will work best with your skin-tone and style, and always does something that really compliments your personality and appearance. I've seen hairstylists across the country (and even in other countries) but Angela is the person I'll always come back to. I second the person who said they'd follow her to the ends of the earth -- she's totally worth it. She really listens to what you want, and knows how to make that style work for you.
Cute place, and Angela gives fantastic results – Angela has consistently given me the best haircuts for the year I have been going to her. I have curly, dry, frizzy hair, and for most of my life have settled for crummy haircuts from stylists who just don't understand my hair. When I first went to Angela, I brought a picture of a style I thought might work for me. She really thought about my hair, and was able to give me a version of exactly what I wanted, but for my hair type. She also helped me discover some new products to help tame my tresses (without pressuring me to buy from the salon). Each time I've gone to her I've been delighted with the results. Make an appointment with Angela, and you won't be disappointed.
Funky Monkey is the BEST!!! – I have been a client of Angela's at Funky Monkey for about a year - I would follow Angela to the end of the earth - if I had to - that is just how great she is. We all know a "good haircut" is everything - why do I love Angela? Quite simply - she "gets" my hair - she is an expert at what she does.
Funky Monkey is a really cool salon - not sure of previous posts regarding Dan (guy who makes appts, etc) - I think he is adorable, he is personable, friendly and in my opinion, makes a good first impression as you enter the shop. He is always courteous to me when he calls to remind me of my upcoming appts or if I call to reschedule.
My overall experience with Funky Monkey is exceptional in every way...call today an make an appt - you'll be glad you did.
Paul Miller is amazing – I recently had a cut/color with Paul, and he is one of the best stylists I've ever been to (which is saying a lot, since I've been to a ton of them here and in NYC, and I've had my hair cut by stylists from Warren-Tricomi, John Sahag Workshop, Bumble & bumble, etc.).
He took the time to consult with me the day before the appointment and talk about the style I wanted, then he spent three hours giving me the exact cut I had asked for...but better! I've never been to a stylist in this area who is as personable, detail-oriented and knowledgeable as Paul is. And it doesn't hurt that he has an all-around great sense of style (I found myself wishing that I could just hang out in the salon for awhile; the whole place has a very chic vibe without being snobby). I've been to all the high-end, "top-rated" salons in Durham, Raleigh, AND Chapel Hill and never once felt that the cut I received was worth the money I paid. That is, of course, until now! I feel very fortunate to have discovered Funky Monkey after years of searching for a good salon and I will definitely not being going anywhere else.
(Not sure what some of the other reviewers meant about the guy at the front desk, because he was extremely nice and accommodating with me. He kept checking to see if I needed a different magazine or something to drink, and he was a lot of fun to talk to...)
So, thank you Paul and the staff at Funky Monkey. You've earned another loyal client!
