Funky nouveau barbecue and pig kitsch decor, eclectic side dishes and slow service. – In Short
In location--and expectation--this cozy barbecue spot is perfection. The ordering line stays full of families and suits and skirts, each picking up supper on the way home. Inside, booths line the front windows--but they're a precious commodity. Try a redneck Reuben--crisp and unctuous with layers of home-cured pastrami, Swiss and cool slaw. Crab cakes, grilled pimento cheese and the occasional duck confit salad with apricots round out the eclectic options.

Awesome Gumbo! – I am one of those rare people (I guess) that is not crazy about BBQ, however, my husband loves it and loves this place. I recently discovered that their gumbo is FABULOUS, and addictive! I love the tender morsels of their smoked chicken and they're not afraid to make it HOT! The sweet tea is perfect and the guys behind the counter are happy, I would even say PROUD to talk about their food. So don't be afraid if you're not a big BBQ fan - they have many other delicious offerings.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! – We were a little wary due to it's location (not in business area), but we were WOWED when we went. The guys behind the counter were very nice to explain how to order and we were very pleased to get a seat. If you go during peak times, I hear it is difficult to get a table, but don't get dismayed. If there isn't a table available, get the food to go. It is so worth it! We both got the ribs. There was so much food and it was so wonderful, it was hard to stop eating when we got full! I wish we lived closer, because I think we would be frequent customers!

Great food, great service – Though crowded (Sat night), we were served quite promptly. The food was great; the missus loved the Q; I am a vegetarian and highly recommend the Eggplant muffaletta (sp.?). Delicious, filling and great value for $$. Oh ... and the corn bread is the best we've ever had. When I mentioned that to one of the guys, he went out of his way to pack some for us to take home .. free! Highly recommend.

You can't beat this – I grew up in North Carolina and know barbecue and have traveled in France extensively. I'm a great admirer of Wilson County Q and of our own Allen & Sons, but this beats all. The best Q I've ever had, along with the fixins. And the rest of the menu is extremely well prepared and a great mix of French bistro, down home food, and New Orleans cookery. The atmosphere is funky and fun, the service sometimes great, sometimes just OK, the servings are enormous. I go to France or Italy for this kind of experience. The value is enormous - both in the pocket and in the tummy.

Best Q in Chapel Hill/Durham – The value at The Joint cannot be overstated. I rarely have room for dessert as the portions, lunch or dinner, are quite large. A downside is that with the everchanging menu, sometimes you see something you'd like to try but it's gone by your next visit. The gumbos are excellent (and excellent values as well).

MENU IS GREAT – The half roasted chicken is finger licking good and at $8-$9 is a really good deal. The barbecue is smoky and cheaper and comes out faster than it's local competition. The sides are really good too. It's nice to have some healthy options at a southern barbecue joint. Oh, and the desserts are to die for- real banana pudding, bread pudding, and their chess pies are real good. One of my favorite places in the area.

Only in Chapel Hill – If it weren't called The Barbecue Joint, it would be a tolerable spot, with a range of food for all tastes. But I believe you'd better serve some decent 'que if you put the lovely word in your name, and this joint serves a bland, soggy, unimpressive and overpriced plate. If you want real 'que, do yourself a favor and head up the road a couple miles to Allen and Son. On the other hand, if you want to pretend you like barbecue while sipping an import, then drop by The Barbecue Joint.

Good reviews? – Quite a disappointment after positive critical reviews here and in local newspapers--did the staff know that food critics were visiting? While the barbecue was tasty, the portions were extremely small. Plus, my fiance` found a hair in her salad. The atmosphere was weird and the prices are high considering it's almost a fast-food type place (read: order at the counter, pick up your food, get your own drinks, bus your own table). The Barbecue Joint is at the bottom of the Triangle's barbecue restaurant list.

Watch out for raw chicken – I would not eat at this place again. My roast chicken was underdone as was my compainions. The spinach was overcooked and not hot. For almost $9.00, I can do better somewhere else
