Skip It – Dont waste your time.
The food is overpriced Bar food. The Staff is unfriendly. Go to the matchbox for before and after drinks skip the palm and eat some where else.
Awesome duck breast club!! – What a unique and interesting idea to have a restaurant in a dining car. Convenient to our work and home, the Silver Palm offers a great variety of well done American favorites, some with a great original twist. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the cocktails are well made and generous.
I had the duck breast club sandwich which was absolutely delicious. My partner had a burger, cooked to perfection, and postiively delectable.
There were quite a few couples with kids, which I found very disappointing, and the only reason this restaurant gets a 8 and not a 10. This is a very close-quarters/borderling cramped environment, and children are not suggested. (Although this is coming from someone who does not like dining with or near children whatsoever). Still, to walk into the train car you must walk through a very cramped smoky bar...NOT an atmosphere for children. I would never bring my children here. It's inappropriate.
But for adults, it can be quite fun.
We have been back many times. Silver Palm is now one of our favorites.
First visit leaves lasting impression – My girlfriend and I had to opportunity to eat at Silver Palm and loved it. We are really glad that we found a new restaurant to eat at. The food was good and cheap. If looking for a new place to visit I would recomend this as a choice.
Great food, fun atmosphere – Had a lovely time dining "on the train" - dark lighting added nice mood and was able to chat with my husband sans kids, great selection of beers, food was excellent - grilled calamari was very spicy and tasty - a great surprise. Sauteed veggies were out of the ordinary, firm yet tender, nice variety, too. No more than 4 to a table allows a great wat to focus and chat with friends and not be disturbed by lots of waitstaff, etc. Staff was very knowledgable about the menu and offered assistance when asked. Parking is easy to find on street, no $10 valet fees here, folks.
Great food, fun, relaxed place. – What a great find! We've eaten there several times and never had a bad meal. The ribs, the smoked meat sandwich, the pike... all excellent. So are the prices. The funky bar up front, the friendly, hip (but not hipster) staff and the dark, obscure rock music in the background keep the dining car setting from becoming theme parkish. In terms of romantic, it's not really a first date place, but if you like a darkish Bohemian, relaxed kind of place, it's a great spot for couples.
Not our kind of place – While visiting Chicago recently, we had the misfortune to book a table here for a romantic night out. On arrival we had to fight our way through a busy barand when we got to the restaurant we realized there was no need for a reservation. I had read somewhere that the setting was romantic, no way. There was at least three tables occupied by customers that were loud and obviously quite drunk. When our server brought us wine glasses he let one fall on the table and broke it, there was a half hearted apology. Our food was o.k. for the price, but I couldnt wait to get out of it.
Climb inside this restored 1947 dining car for traditional American fare in a throwback setting. – In Short
Once part of the Atlantic Coast Line from New York to Florida, this train car now buzzes with 30-something couples and chatty groups of locals at the crowded bar. Supper-club favorites like onion soup, prime rib and grilled walleye pike highlight the small, well-executed menu. Generously breaded onion rings come with garlic aioli for dipping. Grilled Gulf coast shrimp is a smoky favorite; rich chicken saltimbocca is stuffed with sage and prosciutto, then topped with Gorgonzola.
