POW Rocks! – I love this place!!! I have never had a class here that I did not like...Krav Maga, Boxing, Muay Thai, and BJJ. This place has it all and makes it all available to all members without exclusions.

With their open enrollment policy you can study any of the offered disciplines with your memebership.

All of the instructors are trained professionals and skilled fighters in their own right. It is a great opportunity to learn from people who are passionate about what they do and for whom it is not just a job.

All of the instructors are invested in building and sharpening your skill sets and provide on the spot feedback and attention to you.

Further, the student population is as diverse as the classes that POW offers. Men, women, college students, and established career professionals train side by side in classes that are both challenging and fun.

I look forward to the days that I train here and never have that feeling of dread often associated with going to the Gym.

Since joining two years ago I have learned practicle fighting styles and self defense, started living a much healthier active lifestyle, and met a lot of really cool people.

Thank you POW!

Great Martial Arts Classes – This is a great martial arts school because the owner is very hands-on and the instructors are very knowledgeable. There are several different styles offered for any level, including beginning. If you really want to get in shape the right way and learn good technique, this is the place. They work you hard and you will see results!

best workout in chicago – This is by far the best workout that I have found in Chicago. It is challenging for all levels of fitness. There are a wide variety of classes and boredom is never an option. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite classes are usually the ones that are taught by Katalin, the owner. She's one of those rare finds in the fitness world who, as an instructor, inspires her students to do better. This gym is truly a hidden gym...though I have to admit, it is pretty easy to get there by either public transit or car. The only thing that can be difficult is limiting yourself to the number of classes you will take in any one given evening. I'm not sure why it is, but in any 45 min class, you may feel tired at one point but by the end, your brain will chime in and say what a great time you had and you find yourself sticking around for the next class.

No Other Place Like It – I love training at POW. It is so different that any other type of center. It is more of a school than a health club, but I dropped my health club membership when I started a couple years ago, because the classes are so intense that there was no point of going to the gym. At first I didn't think I was a class person - but I cant not imagine training any other way now. The classes are always different. Kat the owner changes things up all the time and has the other instructors change their routines too - so it isnt boring ever. Learning to punch and kick has given me so much confidence and body changed 3 months later. I take all the classes, except jiujitsu, even though it is so popular, I just prefer learning the punching and kick sports. Kat focuses on so much technique without it being slow. Said is newer to the staff over the last year and he is crazy fun as well.

Knowledgeable Staff; Get In Shape & Learn A Skill – I've been a student at POW for almost 5 years now and I highly recommend it. It's like having a personal trainer while still getting to work out with other people. The school offers a wide variety of classes (Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jujitsu ) at a wide variety of times, which is helpful for someone with a busy schedule like me. It's not a traditional martial arts school with belt degrees, so you have a lot of flexibility to study what you what, and how often you want. Some students exclusively focus on one thing like boxing or BJJ, while others take the whole spectrum of classes.

The students range in experience from complete beginners to amateur fighters. Basically there's something for everyone. If you are a complete beginner I'd recommend starting with Katalin's (the owner) classes. She is extremely knowledgeable and patient and does a great job of breaking down the technique into easy-to-understand steps. She also offers great advice on treating and preventing injuries as well as nutritional information. Just an all around great person.

If you're a more experienced fighter, or just like to be pushed hard, I'd recommend classes with some of the other teachers like Lyndon, Said, Mark Miller, or Dino Costeas. Check out the website to see the impressive credentials of all the instructors. Whatever class you chose I guarantee you will be spent and sweaty by time it's finished.

Great Workout, Great Place – I've been coming to POW for over 6 months and I love it. I have never been in such great shape and have never enjoyed working out so much. Each class is totally different, so you NEVER get bored. Each month has a different focus, and the owner/head instructor gives special seminars that are built around that focus. One month you might get a great core workout plan and the next month an eating plan. I really like the well rounded "fitness" program that is put together. The owner is truly passionate about her business and it shows.

The instructors have years of experience and do a great job of working with new, inexperienced clients as well as clients who have been with them for years. I would definitely recommend POW for someone who is serious about getting in shape and living a healthy lifestyle.

Disappointing Experience – So when I came across Pow!! on the web I was super excited. It seemed to have everything I wanted: a multitude of co-ed classes that not only taught serious martial arts technique and forms but also a good solid cardio workout.

PROS: 1) Close to my house in South Loop.

2) Wide variety of classes available all day long.

3) Sparring available with actual boxing & UFC rings

4) Co-Ed classes where men and women fight side by side-no girly girl Bally random punch/kick classes here.

5) Owned and run by a kind, friendly, physically fit, and knowledgeable Woman!

1) Unfriendly/ Inhospitable Staff - First, the receptionist was kind of cold and unhelpful. The class description says that we will be hitting heavy bags and yet she told me I would not need wraps or gloves-but I did!

Also the male instructor who ran the class did not give me the time of day. He did not even have the courtesy to introduce himself to me, EVER. Furthermore, he did not acknowledge me or my technique until the owner told him to and then it was very half hearted and slightly arrogant.

2) The Instructor was very unmotivating and too quick to show the drill technique- it seemed like he was just going through the motions and could really care less if we knew what we were doing (technique-wise) or if we got a good workout. If I did not know how to already kickbox, I would not have known what to do at all and could have really hurt myself.

3) It is overcrowded- It is a fairly small gym with a large boxing ring and a lot of equipment taking up space. They teach 2, or maybe even 3, classes at a time in one small area. Not only was this confusing, b/c I did not know when I was supposed to be doing what. But also, I thought I was going to get kicked in the face by the person next to me b/c we were in such close quarters.

4) It is very EXPENSIVE. It costs about $140 to register and then another $140 a month. There is little room for a flexible pay schedule- You cannnot take single classes and have to pay $110 to if you want to take 2 classes a week. Outrageous!!

In short, Pow! seems like a cool place to take classes, but I was very disappointed with my experience. I do not think I will be going back!!

Degerberg Academy 2 – I had high hopes for this place. WhenI saw on their website that they taught like 15 different Martial Arts, especially Brazillian Ju Jutsu and MMA, an alarm went off in my head saying, "...careful, sounds like another Degerberg type school". Boy was I right. It's like an exact replica of Degerberg, only these guys have "better" Martial Art styles to learn from which is a big plus (Degerberg doesn't have BJJ or MMA or Krav Maga). That's what I like to see in a place. Sure, let the kids have their Karate and Tae Kwon Do, but for REAL Martial Arts I credit them for teaching these adcanced, UFC style disciplines. Speaking of UFC, former Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski used to train here as well. So, if this place had what i wanted, what's with the low rating? It has to do with location and price. Sure, it's good if you can afford to frequent the West Loop side of Chicago everyday of if you live there, but the traffic and gas getting to and from really turns me off. Plus, it is pricy and has that "Degerberg feel" to everything. Sorry to say it since it really does have what I want, but with my prior experience i'm trusting my gut this time and staying away.

Unprofessional, Low quality instructors – Very unprofessional business.

On my first day I told the instructor I was new to Muay Thai and he shrugged with sarcasm. I had a black eye as a result of not being told how to handle the pads correctly and then almost broke another student's foot for not being instructed how to hold the kick pads (he kicked my elbow).

I had a severe, chronicle back issue and despite doctor's recommendation they did not let me out of the contract.

My impression is that they are there for the money only and you are just a number in their lawyers list.

I was so disappointed that I wrote off this loss (6x$130) as a bad mistake to be learned from.
