OUTSTANDING – Hokkaido is a hidden gem. I have had sushi from montreal to mexico and let me tell you NO ONE BEATS Hokkaido!
Chef/owner Jimmy is the finest sushi chef i've ever encountered, and after the first trip, you feel like family.
the food is top notch, the staff is friendly and helpful, and really the prices are TOO LOW! (hope Jimmy does not read this!)
You may go to places that are fancier, upper-classy or down right snooty but you WILL NOT get fresher or better prepared sushi AT ANY PRICE.
I would eat there 7 days a week if i could, and thier lunch box special is so amazing, i don't know how they make any money!
Rock on Jimmy!
Best sushi I've had, great hibachi too! I'm there 3x a week! – Hokkaido has been one of my favorite places to go over the past 5 years. When I originally started going there, I would always sit at the hibachi tables. The chefs are entertaining and comical. The hibachi prices are very reasonable for what you get. All hibachi entrees come with hibachi noodles and vegetables, white rice (upgrade to fried rice and they cook that in front of you too), soup & salad. It is more than enough food to fill up on, and it all tastes great!
After my first year of going there, I started to broaden my horizons and venture into the sushi portion of the menu. I can officially say that I am now a huge sushi fan. The selection of fish is great, and it is always fresh. The fish gets brought in from NYC multiple times a week. The regular sushi / sashimi / maki are average priced, but above average in quality and taste.
The special sushi rolls are some of my favorites! Plan on shelling out between $10-$13 for a special roll, but they are worth every penny! The rolls combine some amazing tastes, and I haven't been able to find a special roll that can compete with Hokkaido's New York Giant Roll! It can't be beat. I'm not going to tell you what's in it / on it... you'll have to go there and order it yourself, but I assure you, you will not be disappointed!
Jimmy is the owner of the place, and he spends all of his time behind the sushi bar. Every sushi order is made by him. He's great, personable, and fun to talk with. Go there a few times and he'll certainly remember you, what you like, what you don't like etc. He'll encourage you to try new things by just slipping them on your plate.
At first glance you may not think this is the most amazing places. I'm not going to lie, it's certainly not as flashy as some places in the area, but in my book, it's the BEST sushi around. From the area? Been to Koto? Hiro's? Saso's? I have. I still prefer Hokkaido! Hands down.
Go there! Enjoy it! Order a special roll: New York Giant is unique and great!
