I don't know what these attacks are about other than they are recommending another new business. Marina Sailing has been in business since 1962 and has a great repretation. I have been please with my sailing instruction and compared them to several other businesses. All I can say is that so far I have been satisfied and would recommend them to my friends.
I took private lessons while on vacation in LA. The instruction was great, and the boats were in excellent condition as well. I had 3 excellent instructors,. If you don't like a style, ask for a different instructor, you will get a great lesson here. I got certified in short order and feel quite comfortable with the 'how-to' figure it out and be safe lessons to get me on bigger boats.
After being transferred to Los Angeles from Bemidji, Minnesota, my wife and I decided to learn to sail since we were now living near the ocean for the first time in our lives.. There were lots lakes near us back home but we had zero experience on the ocean. We found Marina Sailing on-line and after comparing them to other sailing schools we decided to give them a try and I'm glad we did! We signed up for their Complete Sailing Course at their Marina Del Rey location and in 3 months time we had our 2 ASA certifications and began chartering a beautiful Catalina 28. We really like the fact that we can book charters from their other locations in So Cal such as Channel Islands, Redondo Beach, Long Beach, and even San Diego. My wife and I are both very busy with our jobs and we really cherish our sailing time on the weekends. Occasionally we'll leave work early to take advantage of the discounted weekly rates. It never occurred to us that we could enjoy sailing so much without the expense of owning our own boat. The bonus was the entire Marina Sailing staff - they are very professional. The instructors were friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. We love our new sailing life in Southern California and we'll never go back to Minnesota under any circumstances! I would recommend Marina Sailing to anyone that is even considering learning to sail.
These guys are dishonest. Don't Trust Them. – I had a Catalina 27 in the harbor for over 20 years between my father and me. Eventually my used was limited so I sold the boat. It was in the same marina as the boats that were in the Marina Sailing Fleet. I had figured it was cheaper then owning my own sail boat and they acutely told me it would be so. They lied. Boy did they lie. I wish I had kept my Catalina 27. It was much older then the boats they had in the fleet but after Chartering a few of their sailboats, the boat I sold, 30 years old, and their much newer boats were in poor condition. They also charged much more then their advertised rate. What ever they tell you don’t believe them. They have a way to tell you the grass is green when there is not grass at all. We would use a boat once or twice a month. I was told that overall their program would be less then what I used to pay for slip fees and a bottom cleaning. NOT THE CASE. THEY LIE TO YOU. The rates they show is not what they charge. The $200 half day rate turned out to be $1,000 per month. That was only using their smaller boat ( a Catalina 28) boat 2 afternoons or what they called ½ day rate. My boat was paid for and the montly slip fee was less then $300 per month. Part of the time on the Chartered Marina Sailing boat was spent cleaning it up so I could use it with my wife. They do not take care of the boats that are in their fleet. They are always filthy and several time out I had to do emergency repairs to the boat to get back into the harbor. When I got my credit card bill it was hit for 2 to 3 times more then what they told my the charge was going to be. When I asked about it they always had some excuse but never made sense. I know this one guy that rented one of the boats for a 3 day mid week deal that was supposed to be $1035 for the three days including the tax. He did not realize they hit his card for $1,450. Whey he inquired about it they said it was for insurance. I had to pay insurance on the boat when I used it but it was only $10 per day. These guys are a RIP OFF. Don’t believe then. They are only interested in sucking the cash out of your pocket. They are dishonest. When I told them I did not want to continue they kept charging my credit card. This place is bad news. Stay away from Marina Sailing.
Slanderous Comments – There are some comments left below that are slanderous, and although they didnt hurt anyones feelings, they are untrue and illegal. If the coward who is posting this would like to reveal themselves instead of hiding behind an email address, that would be great. Or I could do it for you
Ron and Lori Bishow of Lompoc CA
occupation of Ron: real estate agent in Lompoc for Coldwell Banker. Owns a boat called 'Sails Pending'. Has been blacklisted by all charter companies, including Marina Sailing and Blue Pacific for inappropriate conduct and comments like the ones left below. This is a man who clearly has no backbone, who cowers behind a bunch of flyers and false email addresses. Look for Ron on daytime television soon, as he will be shown losing a frivolous civil suit.
Scum Bags to the max – My husband and I went to have a intro to sailinig with these guys. I had two intro lessons. This one creep by the name of Konrad told me he would make me a "special Deal" I was like, are you kidding me? I am just 50 and this creep is maybe 35 and married. Just married I think. He must have mommy issues.
He told me if I was willing to give him a little XXX he would cut the fee for lessons in half. ewew!
He went on to tell me that we could do it on one of the boats they had under their charter managment. He was looking to get the sheets dirty on a boat he did not even own.
This guy turned up to be a district manager.
After checking with others in the same marina I heard similar stories. This was in the Oxnard Harbor.
I understand that there is a new sailing instruction and charter company in the same harbor called Blue Pacific. I met with those guys and they seem real professional.
I would not let this creep touch me so there was nothing to report. He is a newphew of the onwer. Watch out.
These place is a disaster. Don't let them near your boat. – I had our boat in there fleet for charter. They promised to make sure the people that rent the boats knew what they are doing and they would take care of my boat. It was in their management for many years. The people that rent the boats have caused a lot of damage. During my experence with them two of the renters hit the rocks with two different boats causing $40,000 damage to my boat and another boat $20,000 damage. One renter ran into the dock when he lost his way into the harbor causing several thounds in damage to the dock and broke up the bow of the boat. Just look at their taining boat to get an idea what you are in for. The marina sailing management would not collect from the renter for the time the boat was not availible for hire during the repairs. The cleaning staff used abrasives on the stainless steal causing a dull scratched finish. The manager they have at this office does not even know how to control a boat. These people really have no business being around yachts and or boats. I would not turst them with my kid's skate board. They do NOT respect your property. The information on their web site is a lie. Don't get caught with these scam people. One of their Instructors is not certified as they publish. They actually have this guy sign your book as a ASA certifed instructor buy is not.
Bad news for boat owner – This charter management company does not protect your boat as they claim in the informatin they post on their web site. We had our expensive yacht with them and they charged the renter more then published rate then they showed us they collected a lot less of the rate so they would keep more then the 40% they collected. They also allowed the people who rented that caused damage get away without being obligated to pay for the repairs. They recently moved to a different marina stating they wanted to try and get the people that came to the Farmer's Market to rent the boats in the fleet. Good thing they don't manage a fleet or airplanes. This company may have been around for a long time but they are not to be trusted. They don't stick to what they have in writing with you and always give you a bogis explaination. Stay clear if you own a boat. They also change the people renting the boats Insurance when the boat owner pays the insurance. They could never explain what the insuracne was for and why they don't give it to the owner who is paying for the policy anyway.
The best place to go sailing – Marina Sailing offers excellent classes, cruises and social gatherings for everybody with interest in marine life. Weekend trips to Catalina or Channel Islands. With offices in every major coastal city in the South Land this is a great way to charter boats and participate in events from San Diego to Oxnard. Join this great club, learn to sail and meet new friends. Their instructors are the bast, and they offer ASA certified training.
