Outstanding dining experience. – I don't know who wrote the 2/19/09 critique, but it is obvious that they had an ax to grind. I was looking for a new fine dining experience and came across this critique by " modestoluke" and had to see for myself. It is now obvious this was a slander piece and a very small minded individual. His grammer and use of terminology say's much. The decor is classic fine dining with a diverse menu. My wife and I enjoyed the food and give this restaurant five stars. This restaurant is a worthwhile return while modestoluke needs to stick to fast food.
Hazel's has new owners...a change for the worse! – Hazel's has new owners, which explains why they removed the words "Fine Dining" from the name. The only resemblance to the Hazel's of old are the prices and aging decor.
The service was barely adequate. Our server was more like what you would find in a greasy spoon diner rather than the "famous Hazel's". Billed as a classy restaurant, the staff presents itself with a casual aloofness, which does not jive with the image the restaurant tries to present.
The soup was ok, but lacking in depth and served at room temperature. The lettuce for the salad was so bitter it was nearly inedible, and while we were not certain if the blue cheese dressing was food-service generic in or not, but it tasted entirely of mayonnaise. The bitterness of the lettuce was only enhanced, not contrasted, by everything added to it. The Beef Wellington was unevenly cooked, and the crust was gummy...not cooked all the way. The texture of the Creme Brulee was completely off, it was like a warm pudding... as if it never set correctly. Additionally, since the circumference of the dish was so large and shallow, when the sugar was bruleed it served to heat through the desert providing a very displeasing texture and temperature.
Never have I been to a nice restaurant where the mandated ServSafe certificate is in a frame as if a piece of art. Generally, they are by the bar or register somewhere. The candles in the restaurant were sporadically lit; some tables had them...but not ours. Hazel's appears to be more of a mausoleum than a nice restaurant. With the standard Casino-ish busy carpet to the archaic pillars, only the dim lighting saves the atmosphere. It would be unbearable if one had to take in the full "ambiance" all at once. Additionally, I believe that both my dentist's office and elevators everywhere use the same CD that you loop as background music.
The magic of this once legendary Modesto icon is gone, time to put a fork in it....the only thing the same is the name.
Fantastic Food and Service – After relocating from Southern California I finally found a local restaurant that has fabulous food and superior service! Elegant and Romantic setting providing a 7 course meal at a extremely reasonable price. I had the special of the day, chicken in cilantro sauce, yummy! The appetizer, salad and desert was to die for. My # 1 spot so far here in Central California.
