Very bad... – Please read this!
I have lunch in Selwood restaurants almost every day. I've been to all thai restaurants in the neigbourhood. Actually I've been to all non-thai restaurants there, too. And in most cases several times. This is the only place I've only visited once. And I will not come back. It's not awful. No. The service was fine. It wasn't clean but it wasn't dirty either. But the food... Come on! They served me chinese duck. Well... the duck wasn't good. It came with vegetables. The vegetables were not just "not-fresh". They were cold and they were recently unfrozen (I actually suspect that they microwaved the frozen vegetables and forgot to check if they turned warm). They have 150 items on the menu. Please, somebody tell me how is such a thing possible? How can a little place like them possibly cook 150 different items? I suspect that some of the items are not as bad and I selected a wrong item from the menu. But my wife ordered a soup and it wasn't very good either. Worse than any other soup in 4 other thai places I recently had lunch at in the neirbourhood.
Look, it's Selwood, there are plenty nice restaurants there. I really wonder who are these guys who wrote positive reviews... Have they actually eaten in a good thai place? Yes, this place is inexpensive, but I'm comparing it to inexpensive places too.
But to be honest there is some chance that they occasionally serve better food, of course...
Great Thai, one of my three fav's in Portland – Everything is good! We have eaten here dozens and dozens of times and each time it's wonderful. The service is outstanding as well. I really like their peanut sauce, and their curries are wonderful also.
A neighborhood FAVORITE with the best service ever – I love Papaya Thai. That is basically what I have to say. I live very close and go very often for takeout, and if I have a friend over, we'll almost always go to have lunch/dinner. Whenever my friends come over, they always ask shyly, "can we go to Papaya Thai?" and of course, I'll agree because I love it just as much! Once, when I was sick, I was just craving the Pad Thai and when I got it for takeout, it was nothing less than excellent! The Combination Plate, which has chicken satee, shrimp satee, salad rolls, curry puffs and shrimp chips, is by far one of the best appetizers that feeds many people for a reasonable price. Some of my favorite main dishes are: Heavenly beef, beef Pad Thai, Yellow Curry, Salad Rolls, Spring Rolls, Curry Puffs and Lemon Grass Chicken. All of these are wonderful, and though I am no Vegetarian, I can see how satisfied one would be to see the very large Vegetarian section of the menu. The atmosphere is lovely too, making it romantic as well as child-friendly. The service has never once been disappointing in the many many times I've been there; I am always greeted with a smiling face! I love Papaya Thai and I know many others that feel the same way.
An excellent example of why Thai food is the hottest fix in PDX. – In Short
The parking lot's always hopping--there's a Plaid Pantry sharing the building--but inside is calm, cool and comfortable. The menu is enormous and long on vegetarian options. Curry puffs filled with tofu are flavorful and elegant. The coconut-milk soup with chicken arrives subtly perfumed with lime leaves and lemon grass. Pad Thai is served in generous portions. Though the restaurant prepares seafood and meats quite well, a mix of vegetarian entrees is a compelling alternative.
Thai food that keeps getting better! – I love this thai restaurant more than ever now. Don't let the looks and location deceive you because at Papaya their fusion of spices, their soups, and salad rolls are absolutely delicious. Everything tastes fresh and on top of that the owners are genuinely nice and willing to please.
When's the last time you adored EVERYTHING? – Delicious. My second time getting take-out from here--both times with large groups of friends all ordering something different. EVERYTHING is fresh, tasty, spicy and nearly made us cry with glee. Total standouts: GREEN CURRY WITH CHICKEN--I want to eat this and live forever. Heavenly Beef--thin cuts of braised beef, nice n' spicy, and a good amount. Fresh salad rolls--does it get any healthier? Fresh leafy veggies and a smidge of tofu in delicate rice wrappings, no fat or oil involved. Red curry with chicken--brilliant (but the green has my heart). Sweet n' sour chicken--wow, it's not coated in sticky, icky Chinese-like batter. It's fabulous!
Not authentic at all! – Pad Thai was bland and some portions tasted burnt-- like the Chef left it on the pan for a little too long. I've been to Thailand before and the food here is nothing like real Thai food-- the wait staff could not even pronounce the items correctly. Very disappointed... if you're looking for authentic, then I suggest you don't look here.
I had been looking forward to trying Papaya Thai but was sadly disappointed by the lack of "wow" in the dishes we ordered. The green curry dish w/chicken was tasty but other dishes were very bland. The chicken satay skewers w/peanut sauce were under-cooked and when we brought it to our servers attention, she took one of our forks to cut into a piece to check it for herself right there at our table (!), agreed that it was undercooked and then did nothing about it other than offer "I'm sorry." We'll head back to Bai Tong next time we're in the mood for great thai food.
Tons of options for Vegetarians – I love this restaurant. Their homemade tempeh is OUT OF THIS WORLD. It's excellent; better than getting tofu any day!! I haven't had a bad dish here yet; their curries are excellent, as are their stir frys and fresh salad rolls...
