So very yum! – We chose this place because it's just down the street from home in Sellwood. I checked this site for their hours and saw some bad reviews from a few years ago. Well, either those people were just very unlucky or things have changed a lot because our experience was wonderful.
We ordered the combination appetizer plate to start with. Each little edible was as good as the previous. It didn't take too long to get to us and we didn't have much of a chance to really dig into it before our food arrived. I ordered the tom kha soup, minus mushrooms add ginger. AMAZING. Exactly what I had been wanting all week. He ordered the gai yaang which was served on top of a delicious bed of salad.
The portions were extremely generous, I had filled my small soup bowl at least 3 times and still had almost too much left-over for the to-go container!
The atmosphere is lovely with a lot of beautiful small details. The lighting was perfect, dark enough to seem cozy and intimate, yet bright enough that you could see the beautiful colors on the serving platter. Our server was friendly with a genuine perma-smile.
Though we each ate our fill, we did not leave the restaurant with heavy stomachs ready for a food coma.
I registered on this site JUST so that I could leave a more recent, glowing review of this place :)
A Nice Neighborhood Thai Joint – The service was quite good, its obviously a small family affair and while not fast you do feel welcome. Also regulars do get perks - like several mothers I know often get orders delivered to their cars when they have their kids with them.
The food is quite good - no MSG here. Pad thai is quite good. Fried rice with pineapple was quite tasty. So overall 4 stars.
Our family favorite for Thai – We really like the food & calm, laid back atmosphere at Papaya Thai. The service can be a bit slow (they make things to order instead of dishing out of a big bowl in the back). For us the quality is definitely worth the wait.
The staff are always pleasant & cheerful; they always seem happy to see folks and embody the sort of gentle courtesy that is the essence of Thai culture.
I probably wouldn't bring a large group here since it is very much a family restaurant with a small and busy kitchen, but for our family of 5 it's always been just fine. We get the chance to enjoy some appetizers and one another's company, and a pleasant dinner together.
Great Thai food! – Papaya Thai is the best Thai food in Portland. The portions are generous and the flavors are amazing! The staff is always warm and friendly and we've gotten free salad rolls the past few times we've ordered take-out. We eat there at least several times a month and have never been disappointed.
Possibly the worst Thai food I've ever had.... :-( – I wouldn't normally make such a bold statement- but I was with the large disappointed group mentioned below. Although the staff was warm and welcoming and we all tried so hard to enjoy our experience and dishes- the food was very dissatisfying. With 10 people- there were plenty of different dishes to try- and several appetizers. All of which left a bad feeling in our stomachs. We all had MSG headaches afterwards, and they all tasted overly sweet. I threw away my curry left overs- and I NEVER do that. The prices weren't extremely cheap, but decent. The amount of food was perfect, generous portions. But all in all it was the worst Thai food I've ever had in Portland. Flavors were just a little off, not refreshing, and the amount of MSG just destroyed it.
Don't do it. – We brought a large group to the restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. We'll not be taking food advice from that person again. The food was laden with MSG; nearly everyone left disappointed and hungry: the food was so bad that no one was able to eat much. The Tom Kha Gai and Tom Yum Tofu were missing key ingredients (Kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass and galangal root) and tasted like it was reconstituted from a mix. The vegetables in the dishes were unremarkable as well. On the plus side, they have a huge menu and many vegetarian options. But with so many exceptional restaurants from which to choose, we won't be going back to the Papaya Thai restaurant.
Great restaurant! – This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland. The pad thai is delicious and so is the barbecue chicken dish (I don't remember the name). The atmosphere is very peaceful and the staff are very friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant
Omg, it's so good! – Papaya Thai is one of my most favorite restaurant.
It has a nice aura, very friendly service, and great beyond delicious food.
I would highly recommend to anybody that loves to eat Thai/Viet. food should go eat at Papaya Thai.
[I know i do! =]
I will never eat at Papaya Thai again – The service was slow and disappointing. I placed an order by phone for the Yellow Curry Chicken and spring rolls. They told me to show up in 15 minutes. I did. I paid. Then I waited another 15 minutes. Two adult males behind the counter spoke very little English and after being told that the place has been around for a while, it might not be a bad idea for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to pay a visit to make sure everyone who works there is doing so legally. They should also be investigated for possible child labor law abuse as a very young girl was serving food and perhaps alcohol (they serve alcohol though I did not see her personally serve it during the near-eternity I spent waiting for my food.
Welcome to America. Let me introduce you to something we call an 'apology'. So much can be mitigated by just apologizing for keeping someone waiting. Instead you've lost a customer for life and I will push to see the place get investigated.
Oh, and one last thing: the Yellow Curry Chicken should actually include some ...oh, whaddaya call it ... oh yeah, 'chicken'.
great food – I went there recently with a big group. We all ordered something different and we shared everything. I was so impressed at how delicious all our meals were. I had simple yellow curry and it was amazing. The ginger and garlic chickens were great. My husband had a mango sweet and sour chicken that was delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
I can't wait to go back... the service was great. Anyone writing a bad review must own a nearby competitor. :)
