Find Another Gym – I am moving to New York next month. When visiting New York this past weekend looking at apartments, a friend of mine invited me to use a guest pass for Crunch in Kips Bay to check out a class and see whether I would like to join Crunch when I move. We filled out the guest pass online and arrived 10 minutes before the class. We were told that I would need to sit through a presentation and have a tour of the gym in order to use the guest pass and, therefore, should not expect to make the class. We asked if we could go through this process *after* the class because, frankly, a time-share-esque presentation and tour was not going to be the reason I chose to join this gym. The gentleman was extremely rude and unaccommodating and, after a lengthy, defensive explanation, he finally said that he would check with the manager. The manager was equally unaccommodating; he went through the same long-winded explanation as to why they have to stick to the corporate policy. At 11 am, he implied that he could let us have the presentation after the class, but then he asked to check my driver's license, which had already been checked by 2 previous people. I have a DC driver's license, and I know very few people that live in NYC that have a New York driver's license. Accordingly to Crunch "policy," to use a guest pass, you have to have a New York driver's license.

Congratulations, Crunch Fitness. Your guest pass policy accomplished EXACTLY the opposite of what it is intended to do - rather than gaining a new member, you lost any future business I may have given you because of poor customer service and lack of flexibility.

After wasting 20 minutes of my time, I left the gym and called the Crunch number for that gym to speak to a manager. The number connected to the Midtown location because both locations have the same owner. I said I was giving the gym an opportunity to correct my customer service experience. The gentleman I spoke with was very nice and said that the general manager would be coming in later that afternoon. I said that I would give him my number, and the manager could call me. He never did.

I know one gym I certainly will NOT be joining when I move to NYC.

Salespeople who thrive on credit card info. – Walked in w/ a "7 day free pass", which turned out to be Bait and walked out w/ a negative of $135 for a short term membership for ONE month! Went in the Following day to cancel and now two Weeks later, neither the gym nor corporate billings has refunded the 135. Waiting till the end of this week before filing w/ Better Business Bureau and small claims court. (By the way, Google pulls up Hundreds of complaints filed against Crunch through the BBB and one poor Crunch victim who finally had to report his credit card as stolen to his bank so Crunch would stop deducting money after he canceled ). Gyms should not use aggressive Salespeople. A very Tacky and Unethical, Basement w/ no windows, gym that thrives on obtaining credit card information so they can rob you of hidden fees and charges then refusal to refund cancellations.

AVOID THESE CROOKS!!! – I was totally screwed by the incompetent steroid junkies that work at Crunch. Here is my story (doink doink)...

I was a member of the Kips Bay Crunch for 2 years. A couple months before my membership was set to expire, I received a call from Crunch asking to renew. I agreed, and gave my credit card info and was billed. Yet somehow Crunch never had a record of my payment. After explaining the situation, including calling up AmEx and tracking down the moron who called me, I was given a temp card.

Every few weeks, someone at the front desk would revoke my temp card and force me to go through the entire song and dance again. At no point did any of the workers go the extra mile and issue me a real card!

Finally, after EIGHT MONTHS of this crap, I had enough. I contacted the Better Business Bureau who referred me to the Attorney General's office, and only the threat of criminal investigation got Crunch to issue me a real card. Oh, and a whopping 3 months of free membership (whoop de damn doo).

I can honestly say that the workers at Crunch are the dumbest, laziest, and most pathetic steroid abusers I have ever encountered. They cannot handle simple transactions, and to make it worse, play god-awful music that is way to loud. They also keep certain pieces of equipment (like resistance bands) locked up because, you know, god forbid you want to do something other than pump iron or juice.

I've since joined another gym and am MUCH happier. Don't waste your time with Crunch. There are so many other gyms that are better that you shouldn't risk getting screwed by these losers!

Not Impressed – I worked out here for a year and then I dropped my membership. I'm not the best looking man in the world, but in my opionion the dames at this place were sub-par. That is one of my top criteria for a New York City Gym. I'd spend my hard earned cash elsewhere.

Hunk of burning love – Oh, boy. If you live near this area you deserve to drop in and see the hunk of man-meat that Matt Schweitzer is. He is this 250 lb stud of a man that will show you the gym at your pleasure. He is absolutely adorable
