With the fusion of American, Southwestern, and international flavors, this hip restaurant has the best Banana Chocolate Chip pancakes in Los Angeles. Although called Jinky’s, it’s anything but.

Pancake Review at: JINKY├ó??S CAFE – -Hidden treasure people, hidden treasure.

After a 40-minute ride in traffic, followed by a drive through two full parking lots, I (finally) made it to Jinky’s Cafe on 2nd street and Broadway in Santa Monica, California. Fortunately for the sake of the restaurant (and the review) we didn’t have to wait in line upon entering. Based on the ambiance of the restaurant and the diversity in the menu, I had a feeling breakfast would be worth the trek. Well, not only was I right, I was very pleasantly surprised with the deliciousness of this entire meal.

The photo itself (see above) pretty much speaks for the decor of the restaurant, as well as the creativity in the menu. According to the blurb at the beginning of the menu (see below), the food is a “fusion of American, Southwestern, and international flavors.” It is this fusion which generates a delicious breakfast at Jinky’s Cafe.

When checking out the menu and attempting to choose from one of the 15 PANCAKE-OPTIONS (Jinky’s automatically gets major brownie - er, pancake - points for this alone), there were a couple of major pros I wanted to first point-out.

First of all, Jinky’s has pancake-options I have never seen before (i.e. Tropical Pancakes, Oaty Oaty Cakes, and Caramel Creme Pancakes). Between the creativity of the menu and the hippie coloring along the border, this read more like a menu of pancakes from Ben & Jerry. Uh, yes please!

Secondly, and major props to Jinky’s for this: per the menu above, the option to choose the location of your toppings (“Fruits inside the batter only on request”) is a major pro, and almost makes your breakfast customizable. This is a fantastic option, particularly if you’re a blogger, but also equally wonderful if you’re simply a pancake-lover. Now for the best part. Choosing my meal and enjoying every bite!

Besides pancakes, I was craving eggs as well - it was a long drive! - and luckily, Jinky’s caters to such cravings. I went with the 2+2+2 option of eggs, bacon, and buttermilk pancakes BUT for $2 more, you may also substitute for a specialty pancake. So, I substituted for the Banana Chocolate Chip Cakes. You should know that unless asked, ALL toppings remain on top of the pancakes. I, however, decided to put the chocolate chips inside the batter, and keep the bananas on top.

I must say, looking at this photo my mouth is watering again. From the second the plate was placed in front of me, the smell was overbearingly amazing. I was instantly tempted by this pungent scent of fresh bananas, warm chocolate chips, and homemade pancakes practically made by Aunt Jemima herself. Sure, the eggs and bacon were wonderful too; but these pancakes were just incredible.

The Banana Chocolate Chip Cakes were fluffy on top, yet soothingly crispy on the bottom. The chocolate chips appear as little dots in the pancakes, but instantly melt in your mouth within the first bite. When looking at this photo, you can see the morning glisten on the bananas atop of the cakes; as per my review from Blue Plate I explain how important this glisten is in determining the freshness of the fruit. Well, these bananas must have been collected directly from the banana tree - aka the local Saturday Farmer’s Market on 3rd Street - before being placed on my pancakes. And finally, the end of the meal was not capped with the button of my jeans flying across the room; these pancakes were not greasy at all, and they don’t cause you to faint upon completion. As I was smiling from ear to ear after the first bite, the Banana Chocolate Chip Cakes from Jinky’s are a wonderful way to say “Good Morning, Sunshine.” Jinky’s Cafe is now officially my second restaurant with a 5 star rating. It should also be noted that Jinky’s serves breakfast ALL DAY!

All in all, for a Cafe called Jinky’s, it’s anything but.

Great breakfast! – I would go here a lot more if it weren't for the wait. Great patio and even better breaksfast selection! Service is good but not great, but the food will bring you back! Every omelet I have had here is great! Highly recommended!

Great menu variety, good atmosphere, yummy food – My wedding party had lunch here the day after our wedding. We all craved yummy comfort food...omelettes, tuna melts, pancakes...and this was the perfect place. The food was good, and the atmosphere comfy and busy. We did have to wait a while, but we were a party of 12 so we expected that. Great place for casual dining and good food.

Let the tourists eat here – Am I in an alternative universe? How could such a (at best) medicore place get such great reviews? The only reason I ate my breakfast, was because I was starving. They forgot one essential ingredient: flavor. My boyfriend added salt to his food for the first time in his life...because he was starving too. It's edible at best. Nothing special. Nothing to rave about. And definitely nothing to wait in the very loooonnnng line for.

Great breakfast food at a good price – Went here for breakfast on a Sunday. I had walked by this place several times and never noticed it until my friend took me here. We only had to wait about 15 mins. The place looks like it greats crowded, so I'd expect to wait. They have a big menu. The lunch items looked great too, but I ordered an omlette and loved it. The portions were huge. I will definately go back.

Good eats at good prices – The menu here is pretty extensive and I still haven't ventured beyond the breakfast pages myself. Highly recommend the Blue Hill combo with flaky French toast, I chowed down all that crunchy-blueberry goodness and a neatly butterfly-grilled chicken apple sausage and didn't feel the meal was nearly as heavy as it reads on paper. My companions have been equally satisfied with their dishes (ham & cheese omelette, caprese sandwich) and everything we saw going to other tables looked pretty mouth-watering too. Attentive service, pretty prompt seating on a weekend morning even though it's been packed every time I go, and I also like the warm, comfortable furnishings.

Once you get a seat, it's a GREAT breakfast - and DON'T MISS THE FLAKY FRENCH TOAST!!! – So it's a little tough to get a seat on a Saturday or Sunday between all the tourists and locals who know this place. But once you do, the menu delivers some great breakfast classics and several original items. For the healthy at heart, the 4-Grain oatmeal is outstanding and served with plenty of "fixins". Another healthy choice is the Chicken and herbs scramble with the boursin cheese. I recommend getting the boursin cheese on the side as it tends to be like a big slab of very herb-y butter. But great nonetheless. They have plenty of "not so healthy" choices and the selection of sausages would make a southerner blush. However one of the main reasons you should seek out Jinky's is for their flaky french toast. It is awesome...and I don't eat a lot of pancakes, waffles or french toast. The service is always friendly, albeit spread a little thin at times. The crowd is a young, hang-over from the night before meets early yoga/jogger/bike riders who know about the healthy choices. Makes for a great atmosphere to sit back and enjoy your breakfast. I know they serve other meals, but breakfast is why I go to Jinky's

Good Food--LONG Wait! – This place has a really good breakfast menu --in fact, they are only open around breakfast and lunch times. BUT-they do not take reservations and the wait is always long so be prepared with a book or good company!

Surprisingly, the food was average. – After all the reviews and the Zagat rating, I expected more. Surprisingly, the food was average and the service was below average. Just one more breakfast place. The highly acclaimed Jinky potatoes? Maybe the ones we had were below par, but I've had better at roadside pancake places when traveling. The coffee was good, but we finally got up and got our own refill from the front of the restaurant where they have coffee for people waiting to be seated.

BEST Breakfast/Brunch Place – Consistently the most amazing breakfast I have ever tasted! The pumpkin pancakes, which are year round thankfully, melt in your mouth and the turkey bacon is the perfect compliment. If you are in the mood for lunch, the nachos are piled high and the salads are huge!! The service can be slow at times, but I can understand when you have so many tables smooshed inside this little, yellow establishment. Go hungry, but beware of the wait!
