Ugh – This place has no idea how to do barbecue. Got takeaway for several people (so several different orders) -- neither the eastern nor western style was worth feeding to the hogs, let alone slaughtering them for. All of the various sides we had were a big disappointment. If you're looking for real barbecue, not some bland and insipid version, there's plenty of other places in the Triangle.
Great food and you won't leave hungry! – My brother absolutely raves about this place. When I finally went with him to try it out, I was skeptical--my husband doesn't eat pork and I'm not a big bbq fan. But the menu offers ample variety to suit any taste. My husband got the beef brisket and was smitten with it. My chicken bbq was good but could have been more tender. All of the sides were quite good. My husband and I noticed the freshness of the fried foods (okra, french fries, onion rings)--they had a nice, light fried flavor. You'll leave with a stomach that's both happy and satisfied!
Q-shack - you'll leave with leftovers and a grin – I have had everything on the menu and its all good, you cannot order something bad here, its impossible. The beef brisket is so tender it melts in your mouth, I haven't been able to find better mac & cheese. I'm sorry I can't write anymore, I have to goto q-shack now.
barbeque-gasmic! – I recently discovered the Q-Shack, and after spreading the word among my friends I've got us all hooked! If you like barbeque you simply must try the Q-Shack. But be warned...the portions are huge! In fact, my wife and I are always able to split a plate, and we still both end up totally stuffed! So far I've only tried the pulled pork plate (they call it "pork butt"), because it's so good I don't want to risk disappointment if their other dishes fail to measure up. As for sides, the macaroni and cheese is awesome, as are the seasoned fries, and the potato salad. You simply can't go wrong with the Q-Shack (although, the indoor picnic tables are a bit annoying to get in and out of)
Reliable, flavorful – A high quality, flavorful version of classical Texas BBQ. The setting and ambience are simple and straightforward. Consistency is a strong point.
Wonderful! – I love this place! I love the fact that the food is fabulous, the atmosphere is casual (I can bring my dog with me to sit on the patio), they have Carolina Brewing Company beer on tap. What could be better? I was there once when the mac and cheese was still cold (and unfortunately I wasn't able to enjoy it), but the other selections are always tasty as well. What a great place!
Move over standard NC BBQ restaurants – The best BBQ I've ever had, finger licking hands down. The beef brisket is to die for and the sides, especially the mac&cheese are divine.
It's wonderful to have a broader variety of BBQ selection in NC. The Q-Shack has all the favorites, pork, beef and turkey. There is something for everyone.
Durham or Austin? – As the newcomer to the local bbq scene, the Q-Shack has some venerable competition in Allen & Sons and Bullocks. However, not since my last visit to Stubb's Gospel Brunch in Austin, have I had such a good bbq experience (minus the gospel). Their brisket will make even the most ardent pork-lover turn tail. Although, I hear the NC bbq is good there too, I can never get past ordering what I know is good-- probably the best TX bbq in NC.
Pretty good – The barbecue is a mix of NC and TX. I tried the NC pork barbecue which was good though the sauce in it reminded me of TX style. The sides were tasty; I tried fried okra and mac-n-cheese (warning to onion haters--there are onion slices in the mac-n-cheese). The prices were reasonable. It's a good place to put on your barbecue list but I would hesitate to bring visitors here who want "authentic NC barbecue." Nonetheless, a good experience overall.
Slightly Disappointing – As much as I am a fan of NC pork BBQ , I was really looking forward to getting some Texas BBQ here, much like some of great places I've visted in and around Austin, TX.
I was a little dissapointed in the Q -shack however. Although their selection was good (brisket, links, turkey, etc) the quality of the brisket was lacking.. The slices were either too dry or too fatty. I will give them an A for effort and preparation, but the end result let me down. Still I would try it again because I've noticed some BBQ places can be off some days and on others, and like I said I'm a big fan of Texas BBQ & this is the only place in the area really attempting it.
