This was the worst Asian food I have ever had! – NO. 1 NOODLE HOUSE in Newton Center, at first glance I couldn’t help but think that the décor was that of a low end Chinese takeout with some seating but I didn’t care, it was clean and just as long as the food was good it was fine with me.

The menu was in the form of nondescript pictures on the walls that included the name of the dish, the price ($6 – $9) and a number. I looked at a takeout menu to determine ingredients, which was of little help. The menu was broken down into categories: soups, and pan fried noodles, stir fried noodles, rice dishes etc. it told you nothing about what was in the dish. I asked the very friendly woman behind the counter about a couple of dishes: #32 Singapore noodle and #34 X.O. Shanghai noodles she repeated the same ingredients for both dishes. I was confused in how the dishes differed but after prodding her for more information I just picked one and ordered it with extra vegetables.

Our meals came out quickly; my friend ordered #72 the Mongolian beef with rice and the #1 Satay chicken skewers. We both thought the Mongolian beef wasn’t bad though half of the dish was onions. The chicken skewers were WAY OVER COOKED, they were more like chicken jerky than chicken skewers and very blah. My friend who will eat just about anything had to soak the skewers in soy sauce to make them more edible.

I’m still not sure whether I ordered the Singapore noodle or the O.X. Shanghai noodle but it came with a mess of soggy yellow rice noodles and very small dried out pieces of flavorless chicken, pork and prawns that looked like something out of a can, not shrimp like the woman had told me. They did add the vegetables that I had asked for but they were skimpy and minced into almost nothing. The dish did however have quite a bit of egg, which the woman neglected to tell me was in the dish and I don’t eat eggs. Over all the dish lacked flavor but had an odd taste to it at the same time, I can only describe it as burnt oil or plastic. My friend described the chicken in my dish as tasting like the paste from elementary school. He later complained of an upset stomach, fortunately for me I felt fine though this might be because I barely ate anything.

Wonton noodle soup DROOOOOOL – I love Wonton noodle soups and I am always on the prowl to find the best ones. The one thing i look for is the noodles because my mother told me that back in China, they should have some kind of "bouncy" texture when you bite down on it. Think of a rubber band snapping in your mouth. This place offers that. Plus the wontons and soup is really good.

Super88 wonton noodles can't compare and this place blows noodle st off the map because of the price and quality

Great food - fast and cheap! – My husband and I love this place! And it's our go-to if we're working late and want something quick - I can order on the phone when exiting off the pike and when I get there 10 minutes later it's just being packed up and ready to go. The wontons are awesome (we usually get them steamed - yummy!), and my husband is obsessed with Beef with Stir Fried Rice Noodles. We've ordered many different things from the soups, noodle & rice dishes and haven't had a bad meal yet. I took my dad here the first time he visited us and every time he comes now he always asks to go back :) If you're looking for a nice sit-down place for a quiet meal this isn't the place - as the staff review mentioned it's more of a cafeteria style place, which is fine if you're not looking for a nice night out. Being from NY we've eaten at a lot of asian/noodle places and this beats of them. They really can say they are No. 1!

Best value in Newton – Possibly the most food for the least money you will get in Newton. Forget about the rather ordinary fried appetizers and get some noodle soup. You can't go wrong for about six bucks ordering some version of wonton noodle soup -- the wontons are unbelievably delicious, light and fresh and loaded with shrimp and pork. Add some barbecued pork or roast duck and you are in heaven -- one order really can feed 3 normal people or 2 really hungry people. Great option for take out and did I mention it's affordable?

Casual noodle shop provides Newton Centre diners with a quick option for cheap eats. – In Short
No. 1's customers order at a front counter, behind which sits huge pots of boiling water and sizzling woks. After sitting in the cafeteria-style dining room, their food is delivered by a member of the quiet, efficient staff. Health-conscious diners eschew fried rice and noodle dishes (honey chicken, beef crispy pan-fried noodle) in favor of one of the dozens of filling noodle soups and vegetable dishes on offer.

Real Pan-Asian Cheap Eats – Definitely worth my bucks - nothing over 8 bucks and portion is big. I was pleasantly surprised to see some authentic dishes on their menu, which usually can only be found in restaurants in Chinatown. Try their Laksa - much better and easier on the palette than what you find at Penang. Shrimp cutlet and veggie springrolls are great appetizers yet dipping sauce lack spices - resembles duck sauce.

A fast food place that fits my budget but offer bring-to-your-table service without the service charge. Thumbs up.

Noodle heaven – A great addition to the already diverse Newton restaurant regime, No.1 Noodle House offers a very long list of dishes, all of which are very affordable and quickly prepared. Eat-in for very kind and attentive service, or take out for a quick meal on the go. You won't leave here hungry!
