Great Studio, great staff, great sounds – You know the most important piece of gear in a studio is the human brain. In addition to great gear and great sounding rooms, Piety street has people with terrific ears and extensive knowledge and experience to use that gear. This is not the studio to use if what you want to do is to have a glamour party and waste some money. This is the studio to use if you want to make a great sounding record.

One of the best! – Don't listen to the negative reviews. Piety Street is still one of the best-- a musician I represent on the West Coast insisted on finishing his album with Mark Bingham at Piety Street, the results were wonderful, and the folks at Piety have been great to work with. Shawn Hall worked her **s off to finish the cd design and get it off to production so we'd have it in hand in time for one my client's big shows. They truly go the extra mile for the musicians they work with, and have been nothing but kind, professional and hard-working.

But don't take my word for it. Piety Street producer Mark Bingham was recently featured as the cover story for Off Beat Magazine and here's an excerpt that I think sums up the quality of the studio nicely:

"... since Katrina, Piety Street has been a production line turning out memorable sessions, a creative run that hasn't been seen in this city since Allen Toussaint's heyday... . Immediately after the flood, Toussaint himself finished recording "The River in Reverse" at Piety with Elvis Costello... .

Since "The River in Reverse", Piety Street has turned out a series of definitive New Orleans recordings as well as some outstanding records by national acts. The list includes John Mooney's "Big Ol' Fiya" Morning 40 Federation's "Ticonderoga", The Radiators' "Dreaming Out Loud", Dr. John's "Mercernary", James Blood Ulmer's "Bad Blood in the City: The Piety Street Sessions", Ed Sanders of the Fugs' "Poems for New Orleans", trumpeter Nicholas Payton's "Into the Blue" and The Blind Boys of Alabama's session with the Hot 8 Brass Band, the Grammy-nominated "Down in New Orleans". Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars recently completed a session there, and earlier this year the Dave Matthews Band cut "Big Whisky and the GrooGrux King" during Mardi Gras. Guitarist John Scofield named the album he recorded there as well as his touring band after the studio."

Would John Scofield name his album, let alone his touring band after the studio at which he recorded if he didn't want to pay homage to the high quality of service he received there? Would Dave Matthews, who could record at any studio in the world, choose Piety Street if they weren't of the highest caliber? Of course not.

Piety has great sound and great people with relaxed vibe – I have been a working musician and sometimes record producer in New Orleans for 16 years. I recorded in New Orleans while living in Lafayette in the mid-80's as well. Since Piety St has been around, I knew of their solid reputation, but did not record there myself till recently. I brought a most important project to them- my daughter's first solo CD, which I produced. I cannot begin to describe how delicate that situation could be, but it went very well, and sounds fantastic. The drums in particular are the best I've gotten anywhere- always a big challenge. Shawn (studio manager) was organized and flexible, and the engineer she recommended for the task (Wesley Fontenot) was a perfect match and dealt deftly with a project performed by 3 high school students, creating a sound the artist was totally happy with.

A Very Fine Experience – Almost anyone in New Orleans knows that the bad reviews below are all written by the same disgruntled New Orleans wack-job. Many NOLA business get trashed by that sad person. But that didn't keep us away.

Everything was great at Piety Street - professional, great quality services and equipment. This is especially the case as Hurricane Gustav almost took our session out! Take a look at their client list and see who- along with us- has been really happy working there.

NOT RECOMMENDED! – Piety is a very nice studio with lots of vintage gear, but they don't have any new technology.

I have repeatedly tried working with these guys, but their attitude makes it impossible.

Rarely will a band walk out of Piety with a finished CD. And when they stick you with an enormous bill, you wonder why you even went there. They are not very southern at all.

Yes, they have a very nice SSL, but that does not merit an outrageous price tag, when home studios can make the same sound with a little more work. On top of that, they're just plain rude. They act like they are God just because Stevie Wonder recorded there 30 years ago... They haven't done anything good since then. I recommend DeepScope Recordings Studio in Westwego for any artist who wants a new sound and not a vintage one.
