Japanese or Chinese? – First of all I want to introduce myself, my name is Sean I am 32 years old, I was born in Tokyo and was raised in San Diego, CA. One think I have to mention about this restaurant is ...This is a Japanese restaurant with none Japanese employee.. about 80% are Chinese from mainland China. I went in with my girlfriend on a Friday night we are both Japanese.. and we were ignored the whole time we were there. Water and hot tea were never asked to refilled, nobody asked us if we wanted to have deserts, instead we were given our bill before we even finished out meal. Staffs were not smiling, greeting, not even say Thank you when we walked out. I did not know what was the problem, us or them.. btw. we left like $22 tips which was over 20%.

Good show, decent food – Our crowd was boorish, but the food was good. The show is much better here than other places we've been to. I've been told that the other places like this insurance won't let them throw the knives or open flames. We had a towering onion volcano!

I would imagine the chefs are good or bad, but we got a good one. The lunch special seemed very reasonably priced. To bad we didn't bring another 8 people to fill out table!

THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEPPANYAKI – ONLY COMPARED TO A NIGHT AT THE IMPROV THE GRILL GUY HAD NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS DOING. I WOULD HAVE SEEN HIM SENT AWAY TO THE SENSEI TEPPANCHEF FOR MASSIVE CANE TO THE BACK. SOME SAKE SOOTHED OUR TEMPERS, FLARING WITH MISFORTUNE HOWEVER HOSPITALITY PREVAILED AND , I POLITELY EXCUSED MYSELF TO ANOTHER RESTAURANT WITH NO BILL TO SPEAK OF

Looooooong wait... – This is my first review ever. I decided to write, because I just spent a lot of money on food I was never able to eat. This was my 4th time at Tokyo Wako, and each time, I hoped that my dining experience would get better. However, it didn't. This time, I went in there on a tuesday night, when it was not very crowded. My colleague and I were sat immediately at a Teppan table. We sat as they waited to fill up the table, and then started to cook. I looked at my watch and realized that we were waiting for over an hour, before the cook came to our table. One and half hours later, my food was ready. By this time, I was already filled on rice and beer, and ready to go home. The waitress seemed very apologetic, and I could sense her empathy. But, her empathy meant nothing when I had to box up my expensive dinner to feed to my dog (Sulley). The food quality was average, the waitresses were nice, but the management was off kilter each of the four times I have been there. There are many places to eat in Pasadena, but learn from my four mistakes and don't eat here!

An alternative dining experience – We've dined at the Tokyo Wako in Arcadia (on Huntington) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So, when we dined at the Pasadena location for the first time last month for my two nieces' graduation dinner, we had high expectations. This location is in the busy Paseo Colorado complex, and unless you know the place like the back of your hand, you might find yourself walking all over just to find the restaurant -- which was what happened to us. On this evening, there were 13 of us dining and we shared our 2 teppan "tables" with two other diners. Our chefs, although very talented, were not near the mastery level of those who entertained and cooked for us at the Arcadia location. My scallops were overcooked despite my attempts at encouraging our chef to take them off the grill sooner than he did. My sushi order was placed on the same dish as someone who was seated 4 seats away. We took turns eating our sushi, passing the plate back and forth. (Not the most pleasant experience.) Despite the late hour (about 8:30pm) the restaurant was full and staff scurried around. The staff was friendly, although seeming a little scattered at times. Overall, the experience was just average. Nothing to rave about...or to completely pan.

Horrible service, Rude Staff-Don't come here. – Tokyo Wako has incredibly rude servers and staff that does not seem to understand the definition of customer service. Our server didn't get our order correct, gave us an incorrect bill, and brought our food out late-some of us were served much later than others at the table. I'm not talking about one or two things wrong-I'm talking about messing up the entire order-wrong rolls, wrong sushi, and then taking FOREVER to address the mistake and get the correct food out on the table. The server was incredibly flippant about all of the issues and they just kept getting worse and worse throughout the course of the dinner. The manager was hardly sympathetic to the fact that they literally did not get a single thing right throughout the course of the meal. This place is a joke-don't waste your money.

Worst Sushi Experience of My Life – DON'T EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT HORRIBLE SERVICE, COLD FOOD, ILL-PREPARED SUSHI -NOT TO MENTION FOOD THAT WAS LEFT BEHIND BY OTHER CUSTOMERS. I had been a loyal Tokyo Wako customer since it opened. Due to changes in restaurant management, I will not come back here EVER AGAIN-and I'm NOT a picky complainer when it comes to restaurants. I went there last night and the service was beyond horrible. We asked for sushi with wasabi and they informed us that none of their sushi came with wasabi. WHAT??!!! We then asked, "Oh, in that case, would you mind putting some on for us?" The waiter snapped "I have been working here for 2 years and we have never put wasabi on sushi." First, that is completely incorrect-I've been there multiple times in the last few years and sushi always came with wasabi. Second, why not just please the customer and add wasabi? Third, what kind of sushi place refuses to put wasabi on sushi? Then the sushi came-without wasabi. We asked for wasabi AGAIN and when the sushi was returned, it had these bizarre little pea-shaped lumps of wasabi placed ON TOP of the fish! Do these people know ANYTHING? Not only that, but our tea was cold, they got our orders incorrect (gave us the wrong roll), forgot some items from our order, and our food was completely late (some items came out more than 45 MINUTES after other people at our table was served). We asked to speak with the manager, who was extremely rude and didn't even credit us the COLD unagi brought to our table after an hour of waiting. When we asked to have a refund on the unagi because we had to leave to catch a flight, the waiter said, "Only if I can re-sell the fish." WHAT? And HOW DISGUSTING IS THAT? Everyone at our table let out an audible cry of disbelief. DO NOT GIVE THIS RESTAURANT YOUR BUSINESS.

tokyo wako is my favorite restaurant. i read some of the horrible reviews, but the people were eating @ the normal dining tables. whenever i go into tokyo wako, i eat @ the grill. i love watching the chefs cook and put on a show for you. i normally order ichi ban--steak & lobster. i like everything there from the sake, to the entrees, to the yummmmmy tempura ice cream for dessert =)

Mediocre Food, CRAPPY SERVICE – We went here after a seeing a movie next door - it was 9:30pm on a Saturday and not too crowded. We ordered an appetizer, I ordered an entree & my wife ordered 2 sushi rolls. Our appetizer and my entree came out together about 15 minutes later. The app was OK, but my yakitori was cold and flavorless. 10 minutes later, my wife's sushi still had not arrived. We asked the waiter, who said it would be just a minute. I asked if they could heat my dinner up, our waiter said "sure". HALF AN HOUR LATER, we still had not seen either the sushi or my entree again (or our waiter, for that matter). We gave up and asked if we could just pay for what we had - and they CHARGED ME for the dinner that I asked them to reheat and never saw again - $20 for two bites of what tasted like cold ramen. I would not recommend this place to anybody looking for quality food or a decent dining experience. Too many good alternatives in Pasadena to waste your money or your time.
