Poor service, High price – We totally agree with gordon. Slow service - after seating, waitress had to be reminded from a sushi chef to take the order. Appetizer we ordered never arrived. When asked the waitress, she said, " Do you want to have that now?" We almost finished eating, so we had to cancel the order.
We went there to eat sushi since we heard Oga's is one of the few retaurants that Japanese chef operate. Sushi was high priced and very tiny portioned. It felt like paying almost twice than other sushi places. Even taste was not great. Hon-maguro or Toro was not tasty. Sitting at the sushi bar, we did not feel we were welcomed customer.
We never go back there again.
good but pricey – The food and service were quite good. The sweet potato maki was good and crispy,
The seats were kind of uncomfortable and there is a pretty high minimum price you have to spend.
Make sure you are very hungry or ready to buy drinks when you go.
THE place for sushi in Metrowest. – I love sushi and eat it often. This is the best place for sushi in metro west. The Uni is always fresh and tasty (Good indicator at most Japanese sushi bars) I'm a huge fan of Uni, and if its "off" it will ruin your experience. The Hamachi is always buttery and the Hon Maguro is rich red and velvety. The service is always top notch.
Very low standard poor service poor value for money. We waited 55 minutes for soft shell crab tempura when it arrived it was greasy-lacking flavor, – Tuna was warm and the rice overcooked Ginger was skimpy, service was slow, topping up water glasses took 15-20 minutes. Red soy miso with cherrystone was a mush flavorless wit one tough cherrystone shell included in the soup. Waitress was slow and innatentive For $80+ for three people it was a rip we went home and ate. Worst meal I have experienced in a specialty establishment in 40 years. Michi-Kusa is far better value and quality.
Quality declined – I used to be a big fun of Oga. It was one of the few authentic Japanese restaurant in greater Boston.
This was my first visit to Oga this year.
They changed everything. Menu was renewed, but to bad direction. I asked one of the waiter if they changed menu. He said that it was changed this April. But, he said that the Chef was still same.
But, I can not believe it The variation of menu was reduced. The quality of each dish declined.
Something must have happened before this April.
They are still better than many of Japanese restaurant in Boston. But, it is not awesome, not outstanding anymore.
Meanwhile, I do not recommend to any person. I hope that Oga gets back to their old time.
Great Japanese Creations! – This restaurant is very good. Their appetizers, like agedashi tofu, is very tasty. Their sushi is very consistant and this place has a very modern atmosphere despite the exterior. I recommend their B-52 roll and their sesame ice cream. I recommend this restaurant for dates and for families. Try it out if your in the Natick area shopping. Do not go to Minado for sushi!!
Standout sushi and Japanese cuisine, served with a twist, in the 'burbs. – The Scene
Oga's sleek, metallic decor, attentive service and bright, alluring sushi bar almost make diners forget they're eating steps away from a video store in a suburban strip mall. Opaque window dressings (thankfully obscuring the view of busy Route 9) and an unobtrusive jazz soundtrack further enhance the surroundings. The restaurant is no longer a secret with area families and Asian ex-pats, so expect to wait for a table on the weekends. (Space at the 11-seat sushi bar is at a premium at all times.)
Chef/Owner Toru Oga, part-owner of the popular Ginza restaurants, can be found most nights slicing and rolling deliciously fresh and inventive sushi and sashimi (try the double-rolled B-52 maki roll). Besides serving up tasty renditions of favorites, like salmon teriyaki and shrimp tempura, Oga offers such offbeat fare as beef houbayaki, in which a tableside grill cooks raw beef atop a huge houbayaki leaf to yield flavorful results.
Disappointing despite great reviews – Not sure if I went on a bad night, but I wasn't that impressed to be honest. The sushi was okay, but I've definitely had fresher and tastier sushi (i.e. Fugakyu & Oishii). The service was pretty good, but I was expecting a lot more given the great reviews. So I guess I'll give it another try...
OMAKASE - Chef's Table - At Their Service – As a frequent patron to Japanese restaurants, be it Oga's, Oishi, or a 10-buck deal from the supermarket (yes, cravings must be subdued), I'm not a stranger to the term "omakase". Google the term for a full definition.
Observing the mechanics and organization demanded of the sushi chefs can only be experienced at the bar. Tonight I've reach a new level of appreciation for the sushi chef. The appreciation has plateaued at Oga?s and for the first time, I allowed myself the privilege of Omakase - I was given food and I ate. So many people, and I?m guilty of this, when dining in new or old restaurants revert to a familiar dish. The reasons can be numerous. I, however, believe a return to the "surprise" meal, the guttural experience of dining on the complete recommendation of a chef or waiter is the new form of dining. It's not new; it's a childhood familiarity when my mother would make something and we would have no choice but eat. But unlike my mother's dishes, my dinner at Oga's was truly beautiful - may she rest in peace. Omakase at Oga's - let me be honest by saying tonight was my first experience and I capped my budget at $75 a person - left me in heaven. A higher complement would be that Oga's left me and my friends reliving/discussing each dish all the way back home. How did they do that? We are curious to return not for the shrimp tempura or California rolls, but for Omakase! I can't even describe the dishes I had tonight, and unlike any meal at a South End restaurant, I don't think it could ever be recreated. If you examine the particulars of the seasonal-fish and the order they were served and complemented one another, the meal cannot be recreated. Organically the chef made gems and organically we ate! My final comment is: don't be stuck in monotony of eating familiar things. If you go to OGA's and order Omakase and give a budget, whether it be $40 or $150, then you'll be left with something new and wanting to run to your computer to tell the world
Excellent Japanese Food – Some of the very best Japanese food (both sushi and non-sushi) in the Boston area. Worth the trip.
