Great school, really enjoy classes with Chris Wells and Lee Brock. Simplistic approach to acting, using conversation before starting scenes works well!
I had tried a few different schools but barrow acting school resonated with me the most and i decided to join it due to its simplicity and down to earth environment. I had a thoroughly great time with amazing teachers and friendly classmates! Also provides great opportunities to network outside of the class. Totally recommend this school to join!
I had been attending an on camera class at Actors Connection when a classmate there told me to apply for the apprenticeship at TBG. I thought, why not? I applied with ZERO acting experience, not even my degree, and was later accepted based on an interview and my monologue. I have been work-studying there since September '12 and thoroughly enjoy it. I've made great friends, I get to speak to people in the lobby that are industry professionals honing their craft, and I clean the bathrooms! Hahah but seriously, I've taken classes now with Eric Paeper (beginner acting) and currently with Mark Grenier (improv) and I love it because it's a no pressure environment where I get to be creative in my own way.
ADD VERSION:: highly recommended
Love this place! Very happy here and won't move elsewhere. Great teachers, experienced actors, friendly staff and there's lots going on all-week and all-year round from performances, free readings, charity auctions and all sorts. I've never felt intimidated at The Barrow Group. A bunch of nice people providing a very good service for actors and audience. There's much good stuff to learn and experience here :)
After eight years of performing and now living in NYC, I can say with full confidence that The Barrow Group is the most trustworthy Company for acting training is this city! I say "trustworthy" because it can feel like there are so many different companies here vying for actors time and finances. It can be difficult to know which place to invest in. The difference with the Barrow Group is...they invest in You! After taking four classes with Lee Brock, I feel that I finally have a support base/family here in NYC. All of the teachers at the Barrow Group genuinely want to see their students succeed. They value relationship and the individual student. Not only are they incredibly supportive, they are gifted as brilliant teachers. They find the beauty in student's work and help them know how to best tell the story!
Great teachers! – This is a very good place for actors to "work out". the studios are good and teachers are excellent. They even have a 99 seat theater on the premises and out on good shows. Would highly recommend!
Loved it!! Wonderful group to work with! – Would highly recommend!!! Moved to NYC and was recommended at least 4 theater groups. I picked to attend the Barrow Group first (thank goodness) and thought I would try the other recommendations later. I enjoyed the Barrow Group Scene Study so much that I decided to stay. The facilities are great with lovely, unpretentious staff, actors and coaches. I was so comfortable and happy with how they work : ) They are also very good with informing actors about events, mixers and offer special rates for students to the facilities and their shows!! Good, happy, safe place to be!
Acting School for 2011 and beyong – I have been to other acting schools in NYC for about five years. The Barrow Group is really different, as cliche as that sounds. At other places I was expected to get into the character's psyche, history, environment, plot, playwright's purpose, and relationships - however, in all this, I sometimes felt the acting was more academic and indicative more than personal and 'from the gut'. One of their motto's should be "it's simple stupid" - and not simple in the sense that acting's easy - no, but more in the sense that we don't have to color ourselves with so many intellectual concepts to breathe our characters into life... we simply have to breathe our-selves (Eric Morris reference).
I believe TBG is a great place to take your acting to the next level, especially if you have previous acting training in voice, movement, technique (Stanislavsky, Adler, Meisner, Strasberg, Hagen, et al). I felt the technique I had learned before had become less of a crutch when I approached scenes, and became more subconscious in my acting at TBG. I am looking forward to pursue my career and training in drama here and wholeheartedly recommend people to check it out.
No nonsense Acting tools. – For both working actors or actors in training, the Barrow Group offers an effective, quick approach to auditions, film, and theatrical work that works from where you are, and takes you where you want to go. With hands on instruction from Seth Barrish and Lee Brock you will learn to keep your work fresh and spontaneous, and you will walk away with a bag full of practical tools!
Great Theatre Company and Acting School – I so appreciate The Barrow Group's approach to acting. Acting is simple. After learning several effortful ways of approaching acting that seemed to get me all jumbled up in my head, it was great to see something that freed actors up rather than bog them down in a lot of unnecessary psychological stuff. Thanks TBG.
