Impressive downtown happy hour – At first glance, I took CG to be a mere tourist outpost, located as it is two blocks from the White House, near that store where you can take those nauseating real pictures of yourself in the “oval office.” With white tablecloths, waiters in black, and a somewhat subdued atmosphere, it’s nothing bold, but I was too quick to judge. Chef Geoff’s has the best happy hour in the neighborhood, except perhaps when Obama is able to score a rare legislative victory. Serving drafts in the most voluminous beer steins this side of Hofbrauhaus for but $8, they also have huge, flavorful pizzas for $9 and juicy burgers (ask for the sweet potato fries) for $6. Happy hour is only served in the bar area, which gets a little more exciting than the sit-down restaurant section.

Citysearch Editorial Review – Just across from the Warner Theatre and only three blocks from the White House, the downtown location of this local chain caters to theater-goers and professionals in search of a great happy hour. The bar and restaurant, decorated with dark wood and white linens, fill up with a chatty, post-work crowd of all ages while shirt-and-tie waiters move quickly and efficiently serving plates of American classics such as burgers, pizza, pasta and steak. Super-sizing food and drink has come under fire, but there are still times when bigger is better, and happy hour is one of them. This is when Chef Geoff’s monstrous “Supermug” steps up; the 33.8 ounces of beer almost requires two hands to hold, which is motivation enough to arrive early in order to grab a table at the oft-crowded bar.
