So much better – For a while the place has been getting a bad wrap but so much has changed. I've been a member here now for 3 years and have seen a HUGE change in the last 2 months. Someone new was hired for the morning manager and they are doing incredible. The place is getting clean, machines are being repaired, aerobics room is being clean, and we are finally getting new machines soon. The guy hired for the morning is so nice and extremely reliable. Also real cute:). The new night staff is also very helpful. If there is ever a question they don't know they call someone right then and find out the answer. They also clean the machines. Such a huge improvement. I encourage anyone to join. The rates are also one of the best in Charleston.
Avoid – The worst gym in Charleston: outdated and dirty facilities; unfriendly staff; horrible billing policies. If you sign up for one year, you have to send a certified letter to cancel your membership. Otherwise they will keep billing you and will not tell you.
The only positive is the training staff.
This gym is no good – I have been a member of this gym for almost a year now and you can be sure I won't be much longer. The facilities are usually dirty, the equipment is largely out dated, and is often out of order. The TVs are old and are always dusty. The staff are difficult to identify because they do not wear any kind of uniform. They are rarely at the front desk and when they are never greet you as you come through the door. Soon after becoming a member they changed their hours, now closing at 6 on the weekends. Since i work weekends can't use the gym after work. I tried to leave but they threatened to charge me $200 for breaking my contract early. If your trying to find a place to work out in Charleston my advice is to look elsewhere.
Best Value – I have had a completely different experience than those expressed below. While the facility is more dated than some of the newer gyms in town, the location, bright and positive atmosphere, and friendliness of both members and staff more than make up for the shortcomings.
If you're looking for a SportsClub LA style atmosphere with granite counter tops and mahogany lockers, then no, this isn't it. But if you want a solid gym, incredibly convenient location w/ parking, good hours, exceptional trainers (esp. Doc and J.P.), then come to West Ashley.
Avoid this gym like the plague – This gym is a rip off. The personal trainer Doc Nichols gives me the creeps. He is weird and pushy and I get a bad feeling about him. He makes me uncomfortable. The managers are rude and the gym is overpriced. The bathrooms are dirty, and the price for one month is seventy five dollars. I am going back to curves.
unclean locker rooms gave me athletes feet!! Poor mangement!! – Front desk at night is run by lazy kids, always out of wipeing towels. The same music at night except on weekends. Never a variey of music. The gym is always dirty, the showers don't get cleaned, I had to bring in bathroom cleaner!
The Managment is never around to talk to !!! And when he is around he, dosn't do anything about your concerns!!!!!!!!!! If they had good managment it might be worth joining again!!
