Great Hole in the Wall Bar. – Really nice people behind the bar & hysterical kareoke. Fun place to hang out & people watch. Good place for the money minded as well.
Chuck's – This bar must have a lot of tourist walking in who then get to figure out it is a gay bar and it most certainly is a gay bar. Chuck at first was sort of bitchy then realized we don't care about ones sexual orientation(we are straight) , then he became friendlier. They were singing Karaoke the night we were there and that was fun to watch. Most of the bars on the river front are just plain boring or for teeny boppers18-21ish. The ban on men's tank top but not women's sounds like discrimination to me. I wasn't really thrilled that you have to go to the bar and get your own drink either.
This is not a place for us: Chuck Chuck's! – My partner and I were put in our place by the two ladies who bartend at Chuck's on River Street. "We don't serve people in tank tops," one of them said. My partner was wearing a stylish, sleeveless shirt. We had been to a nice restaurant and to the ever friendly Blaine's earlier. When we pointed out that his shirt was not a tank top, she said, "Sleeveless is the same thing." Since one of the women behind the bar was wearing a sleeveless shirt, I pointed that out. "The rule is for men, not women. We asked how a gay bar could discriminate against gay men. "This is NOT a gay bar." The statement came from a young man seated beside us. The women confirmed the sentiment. "This is the People's bar," the guy went on to explain. So, at midnight we were expelled from the garden of G. and E.
Elsewhere, we had a great time, the show at Club One, the friendly bartenders at Blaine's, even the straight places. We have been going to Chuck's for years, since before it moved to River Street. It used to be a laid-back, low-key gay hangout. No longer, ads in gay publications to the contrary. So check your pride before entering Chuck's. Or better yet, chuck Chuck's altogether.
By far the best dive in town. Like it says on the wall in the bathroom, "Chucks is like the G Spot, if you cant find you cant come". They have quarter pool tables in the back, like any good dive bar, its more an obstacle coarse than anything. The sticks are about as straight as some of the regulars. So if you are a picky pool player, this isnt the place for you. Owner (Chuck) is always in and extremely nice, probably have a drink or 10 with you. hands down best place in savannah. because they are secluded, hours are limited, opening between 6-8pm depending on the day. last i checked they were closed on sundays (have to serve food to serve alcohol on sundays).
