Upscale living abounds in one of Chicago's oldest neighborhoods. – Overview
From Lake Shore Drive high-rises and Oak Street boutiques to the nightclubs of upper Rush, the Gold Coast has remained a hub of affluence in Chicago for over a century. Development began along LSD and Astor Street in the 1870s and moved westward over the following decades. The original character of the neighborhood is best preserved nearer the lake, a district of fine turn-of-the-century residences, while the western edge has seen more recent commercial development and condo and high-rise construction.
Very upscale shopping and dining abound along Oak Street and Rush Street, and the area centered on Clark and Division offers dozens of bars where you can do twenty flavors of shots with twenty flavors of junior investment bankers. Near Chicago Avenue from State Street west are numerous affordable small restaurants. The Chicago Historical Society, at Clark and North, is the gateway to Lincoln Park to the north.
