Not just the taste of Mexico, but the Culture, too! – I love this restaurant. I have read the reviews about slow service, but dude! Have you ever been to Mexico? One of the fabulous things you can learn from the Mexican Culture is to SLOW DOWN! Especially when you are having a night out with your family or loved ones.
The fish tacos are something I crave, and Lorenzo (the owner, no less!) was happy to accomodate my little 5 year old's requests for some substitutions in her order.
The artwork on the walls, the people who serve you, the owner being a "hands on" part of the operation. We love it! My five year old still asks, "Mom, when are we going to go to 'Salsa a la Salsa' again?"
Practice your Spanish there, too! Most of the servers and Lorenzo are native speakers and are very patient with your search for the right verb tense.
Yummy Chips and Salsa! – This was a great restaurant! After checking out lots of possibilities to take my sister and brother in law, we decided that this was the place! We were so pleased! The chips and salsas were yummy! The chips were really sturdy and had great crunch! All of our entrees - shrimp enchiladas, the steak tenderloin special of the night, the fish tacos and the veggie fajitas - were delicious. Our server even brought me ice and some medicine when I burned my arm on the fajita plate (that I was warned about already!)!
This place is a rip off! – After waiting nearly an hour for the food, and nearly another hour for the bill, we discovered that we had been over-billed- only to spend another 1/2 hour resolving that. We were charged for 3 margaritas and 2 sodas that we didn't order and a side of beans that was supposed to come with the meal which we had to remind the waiter about, and for which we were charged- in all, a total of $30 over-billed. The food was so-so; the enchilada sauce was bland. The service was slow. While I was resolving the issues with our bill with the manager, we were interrupted by another angry customer who had been waiting too long for her food while the rest of her table had been served. If you decide to try this restaurant, make sure you're paying for what you ordered, and set aside a large chunk of time!
Mas o minos – I admit it. I like Salsa a la Salsa. Are there flaws? Absolutely. The service can be spotty and the food a touch inconsistent (I've been there when two people have ordered the exact same burrito and one ends up almost twice the size of the other as an example). But the waitstaff is friendly if not overly efficient. And, well, the food is just darn good.
Their mole is excellent, the salsa verde has a nice flavor and a little kick (this is MN, afterall), and the rellenos make my mouth water.
I'm not a fan of refritos in general so I normal get my entree with a side of the tempura veggies instead of the beans. I love that tempura veggies is even an option. Try to find that on the menus of otehr mexican restaurants in town.
So - that's my review. Try a taste.
Disappointment – As a former Mexican restaurateur it was with great anticipation I dined here last friday evening. The ingredients were fresh, and the food authentic, as promised. They aren't prepared fresh on order though, they are warmed, and not well, my chile relleno wasn't melted, the walleye tacos were so soggy I had to cut them with a fork, the sauce on the chicken flauta was cold, the wine list is pathetic. The food has great potential, they'd better figure out the kitchen flow if they want to stay in business because their refritos were too old.
A treat for Mexicans! – After living in Mexico City for thrity years and being married to a Mexican, we count this place as our favorite in the Cities for traditional Mexican dishes with an occasional inspired twist. Ie: chile relleno with a delicious creamy sauce insted of the usual tomato broth. Also, their mole is the best in town, whether on chicken or enchiladas. Their warm cactus salad (nopales) is sublime. In some twenty visits the food and service have been excellent.
Not what we expected – Having moved to Minneapolis from the Southwest, we couldn't wait to try this place.
We were disappointed. The lighting was like a church basement with all the charm of a Denny's. Filthy menus; mine actually smeared with fresh salsa. Although empty, the service was sluggish. Ordered beers twice before we got them. My friend's burritos were "ok". I ordered Devil Mary Chicken. I like hot food, well spiced with a major kick, but this was just heat for the sake of heat with no flavor. It's no skill to make food so hot it's inedible. The test is adding flavor to make the heat become savory.
It's possible that this was an off night. We ordered some pupusas that were close to Salvadoran pupusas, although the spicy slaw on top was frozen in places. We might try it again, but for now I'd have to say it rates pretty average.
Top notch – This is the best spot on eat street for mexican on eat street. Great value, serving many items on the menu ala carte, and always satisfying specials. Wines, great Margarita's and smooth ambience. Speaking of which check out local art students(MCAD) work on the walls! Cozy booths for romantic dinners.
I disagree with the 9.5 rating – The problem with the rating of the restaurant is that it creates a false impression. It isn't good food, and worst of all, the margarita's were terrible. That's all, don't go, find a different restuarant.
Mexico in Minnesota – Fantastic food. Beautiful atmosphere. The best service I have ever received in any restaurant in Minnesota ever. This is not one of those american places thats serves what americans think is mexican food. They serve authentic mexican dishes of a quality that would be difficult to find even in Mexico. I will be back, again and again.
