Theatres like the Goodman make Chicago a better theatre town than New York. Rife with celebrity actors, directors and fans, this theatre is star-quality.
A great Chicago theater gets the prime location it deserves. – The Scene
The 170,000-square-foot, $46 million North Loop complex (completed in November 2000) is a sleek, beautiful building that houses two theaters. The Albert Ivar Theatre features a proscenium stage and seats 856 people in comfy purple chairs. The sightlines are fantastic, the color scheme rich and soothing (though fake stone walls behind the loge seats are distractingly tacky). The Owen Bruner Theatre is a modernist, 400-seat flexible stage ideal for smaller productions. The two-story lobby offers plenty of room to hobnob and lots of good people-watching spots.
Over the past decade, the Goodman Theatre has built a respectable track record, featuring powerful revivals of "The Iceman Cometh" and "The Night of the Iguana," the world premiere of "Wings," and premieres of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Seven Guitars." Its production of "Death of a Salesman" (starring Brian Dennehy) moved to Broadway and received four Tony awards.
