Perhaps an even better place than O'Hare to meet international musical arrivals. – The Venue
Formerly in Wicker Park, HotHouse now resides in a cavernous-by-comparison South Loop building, a few steps from Columbia College. It features two generous spaces, one with a stage and a general-seating area composed of movable banquet-hall chairs, the other a more intimate room with tables on tiers and a small riser serving as center stage. The tangerine-colored interior is decorated with original art that is for sale.
Every night features a different style of music, from salsa to Afro-Caribbean, so check the listings before you drop in. With an older, more affluent crowd sprinkled with Columbia students, the new HotHouse seems like the Near South Side's answer to the Old Town School of Folk Music, which isn't a bad thing.
Groovy boho space – Went here once, to a talent show; it was cool. Jugglers, acrobats, everything. Really diverse crowd, lots of college students and South Siders. Great change of pace from the typical yuppie scene. Cheap drinks too!
