Our Family's Favorite Hang-Out – My husband and I love McCreary's. It's our favorite downtown Franklin hang-out.
Bottom line? It's got a small-town atmosphere that we've come to love. It's small, it's loud, and we go there so often that the servers know what drinks to bring us before we say a word.
I always order a cider. And almost everyone who works there knows it.
It's by far one of the brightest stars in Historic Franklin. And it's not because the food is uber-gourmet (it's not) or the Irish atmosphere is uber-authentic (it's not).
It's because of the sense of family and community that exists there. That's really the heart of McCreary's.
We know almost all the servers by name. We've got "favorite tables" at which we like to sit. And we love the live Celtic music they offer on weekends, though we usually go earlier in the evening to avoid the rush, and so we miss the music.
You definitely don't want to miss the music.
We can eat there as a family for reasonable amount of money, too, because we share entrees. (We'd all do well to cut down on the ridiculously large American food portions we've come to expect as "normal".) My husband and I will often split a burger and chips, which leaves just enough room for a little dessert from Ben & Jerry's (right down the street) or Ivycake (MMM cupcakes! also right down the street).
We are part of the woodwork at McCreary's and proud to be so. May our beloved, small-town pub enjoy a long and prosperous existence!
will check it out this week – We will be going in on St Paddys day to check it out. Called and asked about the two negative reviews posted here in regards to verbal confrontation. After speaking with restaurant rep, we have no hesitation in experiencing this wonderful and respectful environment. I will come back to this page after our evening out and share our experience with you all. Happy St. Patrick’s Day !!!!
Horrible – Very rude service. May not typically be like this but we sure experienced it. Better luck to others.
This place is awful! – Crappy service horrible attitiude from service staff! Avoid at all costs. 3/14/09. You want details my wife was cussed out by the owner and lambasted by the trailer trash staff!
There can be only One – With bangers'n'mash, fish'n';chips, and Irish Chips, this quaint little Irish Pub provides a true "pub feel" with Smithwicks. Guinness, Harp, and Woodchuck always on tap and a special "5th" beer every month! Live Celtic music with sing-a-longs and bangin of the tables on Friday and Saturday nite, beautiful serving wenches, and communal atmosphere make this my favorite place in Franklin
In Re: – Dear person below me,
Are you kidding? Have you ever been to a pub? Totally crazy that it was loud, and didn't have a designer themed decor. What you should have noticed was that for the prices I'm sure you regularly pay at Dan McGuinness, McCreary's pours 20 ounce pints.
A Waste of Time and Money That Will Leave You HUNGRY! – After reading pleasing reviews here on Citysearch, I opted to give McCreary's a try. I was looking for some place that was as close to authentic Irish cuisine as possible, and the reviews really talked this place up. What a mistake. Portions are small, but expensive. My boyfriend & I both ordered the Shepherd's Pie at $9.25 each. They were nothing more than mashed potatoes, corn, peas, tomato sauce, and ground beef with a slice of cheese melted over the top. It tasted like mediocre beef stew covered in cheese, honestly, and it came out in a tiny bowl (not the amount of food I was expecting for ten bucks). It was also served with their "homemade Irish soda bread" that was dry and disgusting, and a small side salad that was flavorless and bland. The "sweet tea" I ordered was sugarless, even upon refill. This "meal" left us wanting more, but with the high prices at McCreary's for such a small amount of food, we opted to go elsewhere instead.
And as for the atmosphere that is so highly spoken of.....HA. It's poorly decorated with cheap-looking Ireland-themed items, very tiny, and EXTREMELY loud. The pub was only about half-full, and my boyfriend & I couldn't even hear each other from across our table because the other people were so loud and obnoxious. I have been to some nice pubs with a much more fun, quaint atmosphere, but this place surely wasn't one of them. The one plus about McCreary's: The waiter was extremely friendly, and was willing to answer whatever questions we had about the menu (if only we'd asked what size the Shepherd's Pie was before ordering it!), and he made sure we never had an empty glass. Such a good waiter, he should consider waiting tables at a place more suitable to his skill. Despite the great service, this was a first and a last visit for me to McCreary's.
Hearty and Delicious! – My boyfriend and I were just in Franklin for the morning to stop at a quilt shop before heading to Nashville for the day. When we asked for a lunch recommendation from the owner, she pointed us to McCreary's Pub. The atmosphere was very low key and relaxed, the service was good, and the food was excellent. My boyfriend, who spent some time in Ireland a few years ago said that the food is actually pretty close to the real thing, very authentic. I highly recommend stopping here if you are in the mood for something hot and filling.
McCreary's is a fairly small place, so you might want to get there a little before or a little after traditional meal time. By the time we left, there wasn't a seat left...this is clearly a local favorite in Franklin.
EXTREMELY POOR SERVICE – The hostess was rude. The waitress was even more rude. The ambiance sucked and the drinks were expensive! Avoid at all costs!!!
Damn fine place – With the weather warming you will find me at one of the tables out front drinking a guiness and finishing up work on the laptop. Be sure to stop by and give my Goldie, ED and pet. The food is good, Daryl and the crew are great. Watch out for Cassie, she's way out there.....
