Editorial Review for House of Blues – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
House of Blues opened its fourth restaurant-concert hall at the base of the famous "corn cob" buildings of Marina City in 1996. Host to a mix of blues, jazz, funk, rap and world musicians of varying notoriety, this spot is also a popular dining spot. HOB's upstairs music hall is decorated with Southern outsider art. Sight lines on the main floor are terrific, sound is almost as stunning, and if you don't mind standing (little seating is available), this is the place to be. There are private boxes reserved for VIPs and industry folks, but standing room in the lower balcony is open.
The Experience
Don't let the name fool you. Everyone under the sun plays here: hip-hop groups, alterna-rockers, "Behind the Music" bands cashing in and blues giants like R.L. Burnside, Taj Mahal.

I've seen security act completely ridiculous at House of Blues Chicago. They are aggressive for no reason on patrons who are much smaller and causing no trouble. It's like they are just waiting to get their pent up aggression out. I was at a concert there last week and witnessed security push a guy from behind and he just went flying across the room. Seeing it was really scary and made me really sick to my stomach. Besides security sucking, unless you are right in front of the stage you can't really see anything. I've been in the balcony, in the second row and haven't been able to see the stage at all. And that was for a show that wasn't even sold out. I see a lot of concerts, but I will do everything possible to avoid House of Blues Chicago. THEY ARE THE WORST. I hate that place. House of Blues in West Hollywood on the other hand is totally awesome.
Pros: It's in an awesome location, right on the river.
Cons: abusive security, horrible, disorganized staff. Lack of concern for their patrons. Horrible sightlines.

The House of Blues provided me with one of the worst concert experiences of my life. Take a look through the rest of these comments, they all say the same thing. I was excited about this concert, but left disappointed. I attend dozens of concerts in a year, but I will never step into a House of Blues again.
