Firebirds: Superb Burger...Terrible Fries – In my opinion, Firebirds has the best burger in Charlotte. Maybe anywhere. But the key phrase is "in my opinion". It also makes a difference whether cost is an issue or not. I've read reviews that claim Hardees or Backyard Burgers is the best. Well, for the price, yes they beat something like Wendys or McDonalds, but that's a whole different category. (In which case Five Guys takes that prize!). But without considering cost, I have to say that the cheeseburgers I've had at Firebirds are second to none. I can't make one as good on MY OWN grill. For a start, because they grind their own beef, they don't have to conform to those stupid NC regulations that prohibit you having your burger cooked medium rare. But for whatever reason, the end result is superb, and worth the $8.95 . One negative though...their fries, in my opinion are perhaps the WORST I've had...they're those horrible clunky steak-fries. (I almost feel like going in with my own bag of fries from Five Guys!! ) But anyway, considering the ambience, AND the fact that you can enjoy a beer with your burger, Firebird is definitely the King of burgers in the Queen City.
Great Food – I have recently moved here from Kansas City and a friend recommended Firebirds to me and my husband. Love the food and the portions were a perfect size. The atmosphere was very relaxing. How ever the welcoming by the hostess was a little cold and unfriendly. I would recommend Firebirds to my friends and family.
Best steak in town! – By far the best steak in town! The food is always great and received promptly. The staff are very attentive and helpful at offering suggestions if you can't decide what to order. Spinach artichoke dip is great!
Very busy on Friday & Saturday nights so reservations are advised.
The best steak you will ever ever in Charlotte!!! – I have been to this restaurant a few times this last year. While you may have to wait for a table, it is totally worth your time. Once seated, service is great and the food is wonderful and the steak is better than Ruth Chris (I heard, I have no urge to travel farther to Uptown since finding this place). The atmosphere is relaxing and the cocktails are terrific.
One of the Best – While dining here on a business trip recently I was very impressed. The decor is very nice; it looks like a ski lodge of sorts with the large wood beams and rustic decor. It didn't take long to be seated and although I didn't try the wine, the fillet was wonderful. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection, leaving me wondering if I've had a better steak anywhere else. In fact, my first experience was so good I decided to return a few nights later before leaving town. The second time, I had the surf and turf. Not only was the steak as good as the first time, the lobster tail was mouth watering as well. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys a good steak. Perfect for a nice date or for business.
Great Food, Great Atmosphere – I went to FIrebirds at North Lake for the first time last week. I am moving to Charlotte in a few months and I will definately be coming back. The steak was delicous and the side dishes were great. The taste of the food was complimented by friendly, accurate service.
Avoid Friday and Saturday Nights – On a recent Saturday evening, I had planned to have dinner at Firebird's in Stonecrest.
When I called ahead for reservations at 5:30pm, I was informed that reservations are not taken.
The individual taking the call indicated, however. that call ahead seating was available.
I inquired as to the first available call ahead opening, and was given a slot at 8pm. When I arrived at 7:55 pm and went to the front hostess station, a group of three early 20-something dimwits informed me that there would be a 1 to 1-1/2 hour wait, even though I had called ahead 2-1/2 hours earlier for 8pm seating.
What is call ahead seating if it doesn't guarantee seating at the designated time slot?
This was my third bad experience at the Charlotte/Stonecrest location involving a long wait for a table. This time, I thought I had solved the problem with the so-called "Call-Ahead Seating".
After being informed that my 8pm call-ahead seating would take place at 9-9:30 pm, I left for another restaurant and was seated in 14 minutes.
Firebird's should change the designation of this system to "Call-Ahead Waiting".
Colorado Rockies cuisine in the Carolinas. – In Short
Huge beams evoke a Colorado ski lodge; the open-air kitchen and rotisserie add nice touches. Patrons relax by the massive stone fireplace with a mixed drink or microbrew or dine on upscale steakhouse fare with a Southwest flair. The ranch onion rings are seasoned with pepper panko (Japanese) breadcrumbs, and the Delmonico steak is Chile-rubbed and seared over hardwood flames. The apple crisp is served in a cast-iron skillet and topped with vanilla ice cream.
Lunch - a step up and worth it. – Stopped-in at the new location at the Northlake Mall for lunch. My wife tried Firebirds Chardonnay and the Chicken Penne; I tried the Red and the French Dip. My wife enjoyed the White although the Red was a little too peppery for my taste but there was a sizeable winelist to choose from. Lunch portions were large with enough of the Penne to bring home for the both of us later (plenty of chicken in the dish), the sauce had a subtle spicey bite to it which was good. The French Dip was enough that I had to pass on the dessert (although I really wanted to try the Creme Brule). The waiters were knowledgeable about the dishes and the chef recommended the proper way to reheat the Penne when we asked. Kids welcomed but probably not the place if they like to run around or be restless.
Great steaks but don't try the Chicken dishes – If your going for a good steak and don't mind the noise this is one of the best. But if you are a chicken lover stay away. I ordered the chicken casadillas and if there was chicken in them it was microscopic and the cheese they use was like cheese whiz. So I couldn't eat them and asked the waiter if the spicy chiken soup was good and he said yes so I tried it. Again where was the chicken? It tasted just like they scraped the stuff out of the casadillas and put it in a bowl. I was very disapointed I would have to bet the appitizers are baught frozen and heated up.
