This place is awesome. This place is a pretty typical Mexican joint, but they have a huge selection: all the Mexican classics, breakfast, pizza/ american food, and they also have and Italian menu. They have ridiculous drink specials that are definitely worth it. On Thursdays they have margaritas for $1.50!!!! WHAT!!!?!? They are legit too. My go-to neighborhood spot.
This is my favorite taqueria. I have their number on speed dial. When I was finishing my MLS, we ordered from them at least once a week.
While over the course of the past four years, their delivery time has increased exponentially, I'm still willing to wait 45 minutes for those lovely chorizo tacos-- simply topped with raw onion and lots of cilantro. I rarely stray from my chorizo taco ways, but when I have it's all been good. Great sopes and huaraches, I love the fried quesadilla de hongos, and their burritos are also pretty good (though not my favorite in the city-- that honor goes to Taco Burrito House on Fullerton). The regular nachos are a must have-- loaded with cilantro-y guacamole and escabeche. We once got a free horchata for no discernible reason and it too was good. One day I swear I'm going to order the chivo. You'll be the first to know when I do.
They're practically always open so there's absolutely no reason for you to not call them now and order a taco or two.
Given that I've been here so many times (50+) and consistently had a good experience, I'm kind of shocked that there are quite a few negative reviews. But I always eat in-house (instead of take-out) and usually come during the day.
The orange juice is fresh-squeezed as you order it (the juicer's behind the bar). I have a few staple dishes I eat here; the Huevos Mexicanos and Huaraches (sort of a taco on a boat-shaped slab of corn). The nachos are high quality and the three salsas (red, green, and pico de gallo) are all spicy.
At least one of the staff is patient enough to allow me to stumble through my order in Spanish (though she knows perfectly good English).
On weekend days you can watch Mexican circus wrestling (not sure what it's called), which is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. Teams of wrestlers dressed in costumes, some women wrestlers carrying wooden paddles to spank their male competitors.
During the day you can get a booth to yourself and sit there all day to read and write. Sometimes you even get a cowboy drinking coronas by himself in the next booth over, if you show up early enough in the morning.
Very often a mariachi band will show up to play at night. It's jarringly loud but actually quite good.
This place used to be a movie theatre back in the jazz era. You can sorta guess from the high ceilings, but if you step across the street you'll see the inscription "Enterprise" just above the awning.
CAN YOU SAY, FOOD POISON??? dont feed you dog this crap! – Taqueria El Ranchito

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
On wed. Apr 20, 2011 I ordered food from here,
It was our 3rd time ordering from them. Although we've had not-so-good
experiences from them in the past, it was nothing like this past one!
First of all, There is NEVER a manager/owner available (or they are lying thru their teeth).
We completed our cold meal and thought nothing of it, the food is sub-par for the price point.
Early the next morning, the both of us simultaneously had the worst case of diarrhea! I mean
it was no ordinary "green apple splatters", it was explosive, and not forgiving at all.
Thursday, we are both sick, vomiting, and diarrhea, the whole 9. I tried over the counter remedies,
but to no avail. I tried to contact the manager/ owner, the woman passes the phone to the same guy whom I
spoke with before. He tries to tell me it wasnt from his location. (yet the whole time was spent telling
me that he's not the one in charge) I informed him, that it had to be food from his location, because
we rarely share meals, due to my schedule. (school and work) He then just hung the phone up on me!
Fast forward to today, Sat. April 23rd 2011. I'm feeling a lil better today, not wifey, she was diagnosed with
food poisoning (DUUUUUUUH). I tried to get in touch with the restaurant again, but Taqueria El Ranchito
does not care about sickening people with old, and under cooked food. I called the health dept. to investigate,
and I write this review to warn any and all that even thinks about going to 2829 n. Milwaukee!! Forget about it,
I wouldn't wish this feeling on anyone. THEY SUCK, THE FOOD IS RANCID AND HORRIBLE, AND THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN!
LOVE IT!!!!!!!! – I went to this place for the first time and let me just say the best mexican food in town. There servings were huge, i couldnt even finish. Love this resturant, its become my favorite place to eat.
yikes – I live right down the street from this joint. The only thing nice about it is the convenient location and the hours. Service is very slow, and when i eat there i feel as if the waitresses dont really listen to us very well. This afternoon i ordered a meat lovers skillet for pick up. When i came home to enjoy it, the bacon was disgusting and not fully cook, yet the sausage was burnt..and to make matters worse while i was chewing suddenly i realized there was somthing very hard and sharp in my mouth..i spit up a peice of sharp metal about the size of a staple, but even thicker. Im very disappointed and i do not plan on going back there anytime soon.
Cheap & Delish! – Love this place. The food is gourmet and cheap. It's really casual and byob. I highly recommend!
Totally Disappointing – Slow service (and only in Spanish), even though the restaurant was virtually empty and 2 waitresses were seemingly "assigned" to our table. Don't try ordering a beer based on their beer display because they only carry certain ones - the one I settled on was not even in their display. My son wouldn't eat his fries -- no wonder, they tasted like a burrito. They wouldn't accept a gift certificate that I obtained from a prominent local radio station. I couldn't determine why they wouldn't accept it (because of the language barrier) but my point of contention was that it had no expiration date on it. They only give you a fork: My son had to stir his coffee with a fork and I had to butter my bread with one.
Great Food,Low Price – Despite the poor reviews from 2008, went to El Ranchito and had a great meal with good service at bidget prices. Plus they are open very late and delover very late. 99cent margaritas (no limit) on Thursdays!
Possible new management? – My husband and I used to love this restaurant for its authentic food and long delivery hours. Recently they must have come under new management/ownership, because the food is now terrible, they charge extra for cheese and sour cream (even if you have a dish that's supposed to include these items), the service is bad, and they changed their hours, so you can no longer order so late. We were extremely disappointed in this change, and will no longer be ordering from El Ranchito.
