Toast is the Most! – I hate reading these recent reviews where they 'Jill-bash' -- as 8+ year customers, my wife Jacky and I have gone there through dating...to marriage...to children...to currently pregnant again, and Jill has seen us through it all becoming a friend as well as touchstone for our weekend brunch or quick weekday breakfast or lunch when we can steal away. She LOVES kids; always makes our daughters and all other children welcome, and the only time she 'snarks' is when yuppies (and uh - yeah, I'm one. I confess.) refuse to drop their attitudes of entitlement when they step in there (no talking on cell phones and not understanding that 'full' party attendance is mandatory being the two big rules). She's a breath of fresh air for us, and we love hearing the staff's stories (they're all great too - esp. Felix) -- and oh yeah: the FOOD -- crabby eggs benedict, oatmeal, bacon, stuffed french toast -- all must-taste draws...and great sandwches and salads for lunch. We have always come to Toast...and we always will...but Toast without Jill would be a sad place, indeed.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! – I had heard this was a good breakfast place...so my wife and I went there in the morning to celebrate a birthday with another couple. Upon our entry, there was a table for 4 open...so we thought perfect! However, the waitress/manager was extremely unfriendly and told my wife and I to sit down on the bar stool and wait till our other two friends walked in. She refused to let us sit at the open table, even though our friends were just parking. Before our friends could arrive, another couple walked in and the waitress gave the table for 4 to them!! We inquired why and she said that is just our policy. She became even ruder at this point and essentially did not care if we left. She refused to give us her name and simply walked away.
The other posts talking about poor customer service are TRUE!!!!
Do not bother going to this place....you will be disappointed. You may even end up eating food that has been 'altered' by the "manager"
Don't take my word...read all the other reviews on Google reviews.
Friendly? Really? – Jills the owner/hostess is the rudest person I've ever encountered at a restaurant. Its sad she feels the need to snap and give icey looks to her customers. My friends and I literally did nothing, just simply told her we had a party of 7. She immediately snapped and said "we can not accomidate you". We didnt mind splitting up into groups, so we suggested this to her, she rolled her eyes and said "fine, i guess." Im not sure what warranted this rude and abrassive response. I was embarassed I had recommended this spot to my friends. Once I told a few co-workers what had happened, several of them agreed, you have to stomach Jill the owner/manager in order to eat at Toast. I say skip stomaching the rude owner, just go to the Toast in bucktown. They will make you feel right at home and will great you with a smile. Let me know once she is fired, then I'll consider going back.
Toast – In my opinion there are several other breakfast joints around the area that have better food & better service than they have at toast.
Another Amazing Experience At Toast! – Tshsu777! You should be ashamed of yourself. Writing horrid reviews that denounce people and call them
"Nxzi"s? That is ignorant and stupid especially around this time of year! Toast happens to me my favorite place to go to in this city. The people there are genuine, and the food is so worth the wait! Jill H IS the reason I go to Toast. She makes the place so inviting. The atmosphere is so full of life, and I feel like time stops when I am there. I can't rave enough about the food, the people, and the great person who takes care of us all when I am there. I came on this site to write a wonderful review and read that garbage written by Tshsu777. People like that are never happy. Check out Toast for yourself! They are the best. Get to know the staff, and you'll enjoy the experience more. I'll be the Indian at the bar..She calls me Hindi Mindi. Say hi if you see me.
Go there if you enjoy humiliation – the manager's name is Jill. Remember that. Mid 40's. Well dressed. High heels.
She's the brunch Nxzi at Toast. Go ahead and read all the reviews--you'll see see plenty of comments about the manager.
I don't want to go through the specifics and relive the horrible experience i had. Go there for the food. And Get a side of attitude.
Best Benedict – Toast is a tremendous Brunch/Lunch spot, we are there twice/week (minimum!). The staff gives you a laugh while you east the most amazing breakfasty grub. It's well worth the wait on the weekends.
Best Eggs Benedict in town - the Prosciutto is the key as is the Hollandiase which has a unique flavor that is just pefect.
All the food tastes exactly like you would expect it to - anything you order will be sure to delight and the cool, super-casual setting makes it the ideal joint for a Sunday morning. The staff is awesome; they always go out of their way to be nice to our kids and they have never messed up our order - never! The hostess is fabulous and knows everybody's name and does a superb job of creating a great vibe, every time.
The radio will be on, the crowd will be happy and the food will knock your socks off, enough said.....
No Thanks – I should have left after being told there was an hour wait, because the food was NOT worth the wait. Nor was the service. The hostess was rude and my waitress actually brought the bill minutes after my food was served. Forget about the second cup of coffee, this pushy restaurant would rather give your seat to the next customer.
If you head to Toast plan on waiting an hour and do not expect any customer service. It was a big disappointment.
Crowded not Cozy, but Worth the Wait – Its easier to list what Toast is NOT:
1. Toast is NOT a place to take your elderly grandparents on a weekend
2. Toast is NOT the place for you if you like to drink coffee and have LONG conversations at the expense of other hungry diners waiting to eat
3. Toast is NOT the place to eat if you just purchased a living room set at Ikea and you want to bring it inside with you while you eat.
What toast is simply GREAT food at a GREAT price, which explains the insane wait, the extremely busyness of the staff, the desire to seat other waiting hungry diners while you finished your meal 30 minutes ago, and a hostess that must run her seating as a drill sergeant.
Is it perfect? No. Is it worth it? YES!
Great Experience – My daughter and I went for brunch this past Wednesday to Toast and found it to be a wonderful experience. Not only was the food excellent, but our waitress who I believe is the manager as well ,made our afternoon fun. She had a great personality and was extremely accommodating. We walked into the restaurant near closing time and we weren't rushed in the least. As a matter of fact, when we finally left (and we were the very last to leave) she offered us coffee for the road. We are looking forward to dining at Toast in the near future and we are fortunate enough to have the same cute, fun waitress.
