McCormick Place's hidden secret. – The Venue
Just south of Soldier Field within the mammoth McCormick Place, the Arie Crown Theater hosts everything from pop concerts to large-scale lectures and presentations. New sound and lighting systems and divider curtains (to alter stage dimensions) make the Arie Crown better suited to host long-running Broadway tours.
Built in 1960, the fan-shaped, 4,249-seat theater was severely damaged in a fire that devastated McCormick Place in 1967. It reopened in 1971 with surprisingly poor acoustics and sightlines. After years of fitful revampings, the Arie Crown underwent a multimillion-dollar overhaul beginning in November 1997. Also in 1997, all seats were rebuilt and reupholstered, new carpeting was installed, and eight more boxes added. The Arie Crown has a capacity of approximately 8,000.
