Slow! – Extremely slow service. We waited over an hour for our food even though it was barely a third full. The food was average, the beer list good. We had to chase up our waitress who told us "the food is coming" and then brought it out literally twenty seconds later, so clearly the meals had been sitting under a heat lamp in the kitchen.
In addition, the live music was amplified far too loud for such a small room
Avoid this restaurant... anything's got to be better! – Expensive and food not good. My husband had a dry pork shank. The bread was cold, dry and hard. Everything was overpriced to compensate the coupons they give out to lure customers into the restaurant. Entertainment was really below expectations. I have to admit, the beer was good, but overpriced... $5.95 for a draft. Yikes!
Everyone I take here loves it!! Wake up and visit! – Jim Glunz is awesome. Although his restaurant has grown in popularity over the last three years he still never forgets a face. I've been to every German restaurant in the city and this is the best (the Brauhaus being a close 2nd) ...also I go all over Chicago eating and drinking and this place is my home away from home. Try all the beers - they have the most thoughtful beer selection in town and they don't apologize for not offering tasteless domestic beers. They slow pour every beer 7 authentic German minutes. The food is great - I assure you that every dish is served from real, fresh ingredients. They even make their own desserts. Highly recommend the local jazz on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 8PM. It is the most relaxing scene in the city. So walk right up (there is always parking on Warner Ave.) and ask for a beer recommendations - Jim will be happy to help.
A Feast for senses – This was an unforgettable experience. I totally went all out for this dinner. My husband and I went there for our anniversary. We started with a few beers and an appetizer at the bar. The staff was so knowledgable with choosing good german beers that would taste well after one another. So we were able to appreciate the full bodies of each one. I can taste all of the flavors of Germany in the cuisine. It has to be closest your going to get without going there. The entrees were like a piece of heaven, melting in your mouth, and so sensual to the tastebuds that I think I giggled at first bite. This was all paired with the perfect wine, and the a decadent desert spread. I had to go for the sampler dessert, and I was not disappointed at all. Over all, the mood was right, and the setting and atmosphere were perfect for the occasion. I would recommend this place any time.
spaetzle like in Munich – I had given up on finding that great spaetzle with cheese and onions that I'd had in Munich...and then I found Glunz. Wow. First, we were blown away by the beer pouring expertise of the staff...these people know how to pour a beer the right way. They take the time to do it right. The Reissdorf comes to you with a fluffy, creamy head that's just amazing. And the food is equally spectacular; the soups, the venison, the schnitzel, and two kinds of spaetzle. They have a wide selection of German brews on tap, and even have a German band sometimes. Staff is very friendly (and very cute!) If you want German, this is the place to go.
NICE, UNPRETENTIOUS, GREAT FOOD & SERVICE – I'm very happy to have found Glunz. It seems there are fewer and fewer German restaurants to choose from these days, and Glunz is VERY good. I really like the menu selection, many German favorites included, and all prepared flawlessly. Special touches you often don't find in restaurants include great salads and appetizers, and exceptionally well prepared soups. I love the service also. No pretention here.... just efficient, experienced friendly and polite staff. SUPPORT THIS PLACE if you like German food. It definitely deserves to succeed and be here a long, long time.
Incredible! – The food is just amazing! The waitresses are easy on the eyes too. I had the pork tenderloin with spatzel, and bites of the beef stroganoff and a bratwurst dish. Try the apple strudel too. All was incredible and authentic. The beer and selection of german beers is fantastic. Careful, it is stronger and leads to fun. This is the best German restaurant in Illinois!
Great and authentic – Sauerbraten was amazing and the beer list is extensive. My firend had the Stroganoff and it was fantastic! Spaetzle and red cabbage were definitely homemade, there's no canned stuff at this place. If you're looking for true German cuisine, this is it. I'll be back my next trip to Chicago
Elevated German fare in a casual, old-world environment. – The Scene
Carved wood seating, dim lighting and white linen-topped tables make for a romantic, cozy vibe in this North Center restaurant. A long bar beckons beer lovers, and traditional music evokes nostalgia for the Old Country. Personable, knowledgeable servers help patrons select from the hefty menu while making just the right amount of chitchat.
In addition to must-have dishes like Wiener schnitzel, served crunchy and golden brown with tart cranberry jam and parsley potatoes, you'll come across surprises like pumpkin-ginger soup with feta crusts and toasted pumpkin seeds. The menu hits more than it misses, thanks to plates like pork tenderloin topped with bacon-mushroom sauce alongside ethereal herb spaetzle. Pretzel with dual mustards is a bland disappointment, but the accompanying kosher-salted radish makes for great noshing. For something lighter (at least comparatively), try pan-seared Chilean sea bass with buttered linguini and tomato-basil cream. Wrap up your meal with fried, cinnamon sugar-kissed apple rings with warm creme anglaise--a crispy, tasty alternative to apple pie.
Beyond schnitzel... – Gourmet German? Sounds a bit like an oxymoron, I agree, but it's really the best description for the fare at Glunz Bavarian Haus. The menu is impressive and features some compelling takes on traditional dishes. I started with the potato leek soup and was floored by it's complexity, replete with a frothy, buttery emulsion. The spinach spatzle, cheesy and decadent is a wonderful alternative for vegetarians (usually left to go hungry in german restaurants). The filet of beef stroganoff is sinfully rich and paired with bright, fluffy herbed spaetzel. I had the sauerbraten with candied apple red cabbage & herbed spaetzel, it was delicious. My wife & I brought the family here for our brother-in-law's birthday, and we were knocked out by the presentation of the food, the warm friendly service and the profound depth of the recipes.
