This restaurant was sold and is now a chain mexican restaurant – Not only did this restaurant change its name to Los Paisanos and go with a buffet long time ago but it has been a mexican restaurant Torreros now for a couple of months. Outdated review and no way to remove the restaurant

A family-run gem for hearty Puerto Rican and Caribbean food – First, the restaurant's new name is Los Paisanos, still family-owned and located near Big Lots at the intersection of NC54 and NC55 in south Durham, just off I40 on the western fringe of RTP.

We tried it for the first time today and were impressed. In addition to the menu, they have a very nice buffet, available even for Saturday lunch. My wife doesn't do ethnic and she raved. Among the items: delicious roast pork, tropical roast chicken, spicy wings, black beans and rice, rice and peas, fajitas, fried plantains, homemade empanadas, and cassava, along with a small salad bar and fruit. Well-spiced but not hot - for that, ask the owner for some homemade hot sauce, an innocent-looking squeeze bottle of orange paste that will have you sweating within seconds, even as you reach for more.

The plaza they're in is nondescript, but they've done a nice job with the interior, a large comfortable space with peach-colored walls and original art. It isn't fancy, but it's spotless, and you'll be attended to by a family that obviously cares about what's on your plate.

It's a shame that, despite excellent reviews by both newspapers, cars are lining up at the adjacent fast food restaurants instead of trying something different here, at not much more cost. It isn't fancy and probably isn't where you'd take someone for an impressive or romantic meal, but you will eat well and a little differently.

One of a kind in the Triangle – My husband and I hadn't had any Puerto Rican food since our honeymoon and we're delighted to stumble upon this little gem. The prices are reasonable, the portions are very generous, and most importantly the food is delicioso! The best thing about Gran Sabana is that the dinner entrees contain many side dishes so you can try a little bit of everything. I recommend the mofongo, arrepas, and the mojo de ajo. The mojo de ajo contains lots of cilantro and is the best I've ever eaten. The owners are very friendly and delight in talking about their signature dishes. Try them out, you won't be disappointed!

A breath of fresh air! – Run by a husband and wife team, Gran Sabana is mostly Venezuelan, with some Latin American influences thrown in. The food reminds me of Miami's wonderful Cuban restaurants. The shreded beef Pabellon Criollo is Venezuela's answer to Ropa Vieja. It's flavorful, with out being spicy. The fried plantains are succulent and sweet, the perfect accompanyment to their black beans and rice. We also had a whole fried fish that was moist and delicious. The homemade sauces at Gran Sabana are what makes the place really worth the trip. Don't miss their homemade mojo de ajo, which tastes of garlic, olive oil, and lemon. They also make wonderful red and green hot sauces for accompanying the food. We topped the whole thing off with some Flan that was to die for!

The service was great, and the atmosphere inside the restaurant is pleasant, despite the ramshackle strip mall exterior.
