Bistro food, inconsistent service – I really like Bacchus for what it is, namely a bistro. It's meant for sitting outside and lazily eating some bistro style food. Granted, the menu is a little ambitious in some respects, but if you stick to the basics you won't be disappointed. Don't go here for a quick bite - the service can inconsistent. But if you want to hang out with a nice glass of wine or a good beer and some steak frites in a pleasant garden, I highly recommend.

Worst service I have ever encountered – I am sure the food is delicious, but I never got the opportunity to taste it. My wife and I -- after finding our reservation was not recorded, and being sort of sneered at for having the temerity to ask for a garden table, as we had reserved -- waited, first for water, then for bread, then for someone to take our order....and then a full hour for our appetizers (a green salad and a brochette with vegetables) to be served. After being told repeatedly the appetizers would arrive in "two minutes," while we grew increasingly agitated and starving, we decided to leave and take our chances elsewhere. Who knew how long it would be, or how long for our steaks to arrive after that?

We found respite at Bedouin Tent next door, where the service was prompt and friendly and the food (as always) was totally delicious.

Everyday sophistication. – My boyfriend and I passed this place by at least 50 times before we finally ate there- now we eat there once a week! The dinners are great, but I want to speak to the brunch. They have a real brunch menu with lots of offerings, a lovely lemony hollandaise, and rich coffee. I am always picky about potatoes, and the Bacchus potatoes define what I look for- soft and moist, stuck together with a pile of creamy caramelized onions. The rich egg dishes are rounded out by a lovely green salad. Despite the small size they don't rush you out, it seems like they'll serve you coffee all day if you let them.

Bacchus is overwhelmingly charming and warm in a very neighborhood kind of way, after I was there only twice the manager (or owner or "the waiter who's always there") recognized us and greeted my boyfriend and I with a cheerful "welcome back" wave.

2 for 1 wednesday – Last wednesday i went to bacchus on atlantic av.I hadn't been there in a while and talking to my friend i remembered that they use to do a 2 for 1 entrees on wednesday. So i called to find out and they did tell me that they were still doing it. So i went there with my friend and we had a great time, the food was really good i had a beef stew (perfect winter dish) and my friend had the hanger steak. The ambiance and the service was friendly and casual. Because we knew the bill was gonna be half of what it was supposed to be, the waiter helped us to pick a very nice bottle wine on a very impressive wine list.

Bacchus is a very nice french bistro with friendly people, i'll go back there very soon...

Excellent French Bistro. – I have been enjoying the great food and wines at Bacchus since my move from Manhattan to Brooklyn earlier this year. This great gem of a restaurant has been one of the unexpected joys of my new hood. Not only has the food been uniformly excellent but the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere has assured me that Brooklyn can equal or better anything that Manhattan

can offer. Every New Yorker should enjoy at least one great meal there.

Go next door to Bedouin Tent... – After waiting twenty minutes, we were finally seated, another ten minutes passed until a waiter approached us. A waiter rushed us through the specials and brought us the bottle of wine we ordered.

Bacchus ran out of breadbaskets and bread! They brought us a tiny plate with toasted wonder bread and one slice of french bread. The foie gras was not fresh... the oysters... also not so fresh.

Medium rare filet at Bacchus translates to tough red meat almost well done. The leg of lamb was fair but, like the filet, was served luke warm.

The desserts were fine, nothing special- warm chocolate cake and a caramel meringue.

We had full wine glasses and the manager asked us to get up and move to a table at the bar so they could seat a larger party in the space we occupied.

Poor, inattentive yet rushed service... combined with substandard food.

At last, a solid place on Atlantic Ave – I have been going to Baccus since its first days and Although the friendliness of the owners kept me coming back, the food was ok but not that special. Now, I have to say that they have put it toghether. Food has been consistently good for a while and still at a great price. But their most amazing feature is their wine list. It can rival any upscale French restaurant but was kept at a very reasonable price. The owners are passionate about wine and love to talk about it. Baccus is going to be there for a while. Great!

Steak frites alert! A standout French bistro on Atlantic Avenue. – The Scene
Another French bistro is the last thing this neighborhood needed, but that hasn't stopped Smith Street locals from showing up in droves. The railroad dining room, decorated with antique wine presses, distressed mirrors and simple wood tables, attracts a laid-back yet food-serious crowd. If you're feeling social, sit in the clubby bar area, where the gregarious owners chat up regulars; the wood-wrapped back room and leafy, smoke-friendly garden is more relaxing.

The Food
It's surprising just how good familiar French bistro food can be. Rich-stocked French onion soup is chock-full of caramelized onions under a bubbly blanket of cheese. Steak frites--juicy, buttery (sometimes too much so) and nicely charred--arrives with a heap of crispy fries, and homey dishes, like moist roasted rabbit in a mustardy glaze, couldn't be more satisfying. Only a loose creme brulee and uninspired cheese-charcuterie plate can stand improvement.

A perfect bistro – Compared to the droves of mediocre restaurants on nearby Smith Street, Bacchus is a gem. It's the closest I've found to a real French bistro. The steak and coq au vin stand out. It's great for a date...the garden is very romantic. And the wine list is superb.

Warm neighborhood bistro – This is a very warm, affordable neighborhood restaurant. It opened within the last year and each time I've visited I think the food has gotten better and better (after a so-so start). Although the staff overall may not be so outgoing, the owner is extremely warm and friendly and welcomes you as if it was his home. The prices are very affordable and the ambiance in the garden or enclosed patio is lovely. Two dishes I can recommend are the coq au vin and the pork tenderloin. Also, they now have a liquor license.
