The Copernicus Center is the de facto cultural center for the city's huge Polish population. – The Venue
The Copernicus Center's main attraction is the 2,045-seat Gateway Theater which presents bilingual plays and performances throughout the year. Kids, in particular, love the starry sky that appears as the lights go down in the theater, which is the last of the gorgeous movie palaces built by architects Rapp & Rapp, who also designed the Cadillac Palace and Oriental, which operated as movie theaters before they became live theater venues. The Gateway also hosts a silent film festival every summer.
Copernicus' major fund-raiser, the popular Taste of Polonia, is a summer festival that's usually held over Labor Day weekend. Polka bands and Polish dancers in traditional dress entertain, while authentic foods and carnival games are served up under a tent in the parking lot.
