A transformation is in the works... – Calo, Calo, Calo...what are you Finestra de Calo or Calo Ristorante? An old favorite that I've been going to since I was a kid is getting on the New Andersonville band wagon in a HUGE way. I hope you don't change so much that I don't recognize you. The Italian's delicious, the ribs are delicious but I went there for the dark, smoky, atmosphere. Now they're opening up the windows and letting the sun in and I'm not sure what's going to happen, maybe you're already done as I haven't been there for awhile. But I sure can't blame you, you'd be crazy to pass that train up. Although please TRY not to raise the prices to a totally ridiculous amount, for my sake.
If Tony Soprano lived in Andersonville, he'd be huddled in a booth at this old-school Italian restaurant. – The Scene
With its big red leather booths, terra cotta walls and dim, dim lighting, Calo feels like a '60s supper club. And it should, since this place has been serving up pizza, spaghetti and other Italian classics since 1963. Regulars linger at the long, smoky bar, while families and couples on dates keep things buzzing in the adjacent dining room. Service is quick and no-nonsense.
Classic, reasonably priced Italian, done right. Start with fried mushrooms or zucchini, thickly breaded and served with marinara sauce. Thin-crust pizza is delicious; choose from two dozen toppings like giardiniera (hot peppers and vegetables marinated in oil), salami, roast beef and spinach. Pasta lovers go for gnocchi Gorgonzola: pillowy pasta dumplings filled with Gorgonzola cheese, in a tomato-cream-basil sauce topped with goat cheese. The extensive menu also includes steak, fish, veal, crab legs and lobster tail.
Great Drunk Food – It's very dark in here. This place has the perfect balance of value and taste. They're not going to knock your socks off with some crazy dish. Go to Finestra di Calo next door if you want awesome. This is traditional Italian food with a great price tag. The real reason I keep coming back for more is because they deliver until some ungodly hour. (And please don't break my kneecaps, because I love your food. What the editorial review says is true. You totally expect to see some Mafiosi having dinner in here.)
Great Restaurant – My wife and I was visiting Chicago and was passing Calo Ristorante on Clark. We stopped and had dinner. We had a special for the day. Fettucini Con Cappesante Allo Zafferano, Pan seared scallops, spinach & cherry tomatoes in a cream saffron sauce served over fettuccine. It was excellent. The scallops were tender and great taste. The cream saffron sauce was light and great flavor. The fettuccine was cooked just right. It was not soft and mushy but firm and done. I highly recommend the restaurant and will be returning when I am back in the area.
