Camera Zone are a disgusting practice and shouldn’t be allowed to trade !!
On entering this is shop yesterday and being greeted by a big smile and a good attitude I found myself kind of at ease compared to the other shops in the area especially the one’s down on Fisher mans wharf. After a few moments explaining about the camera that I wanted the salesman “Ralph “ or so I was led to believe!! opened up the cabinet and showed me the exact camera that I came looking for the Cannon SD990 so we talked and the price was a lot more than what we had bought our original Cannon SD 990 for so we declined the offer. Soon after he had another camera, more advanced but from Sony and said “look this is the same price it’s a better camera by far it has HD facility etc and we can give you a great deal “ I asked some questions like does it take pictures in black and white sepia, color swap, panoramic lens capacity, etc like our old Cannon he replied “Yes all theses new camera’s have this facility and more but are called something else for patent issues” I was a bit hesitant and after a few seconds thought ok I‘m done I want a Cannon like my last one so went to leave the shop. Ralph then came up with another deal and dropped $70 off the price threw in a memory card and a camera case so I thought ok what the hell I need a camera it sounds like a good deal, the camera looks great and the pictures looked great. So I parted with $299.
A few blocks down the rd I stopped at a café and played with the camera , after a short while I discovered that the product did not have the effects that I had asked for and others modes that the Cannon had so I promptly returned to the shop and said can you help me out can’t find the settings that I require? so good old Ralph took the camera and played with it for about 15 minutes and could was stumped also so he called the owner ( His uncle ) He also could not answer my question and then replied “Ah its all on the software Sony include every thing on the software these day’s “ I replied “but I asked for a camera that would take black and white photos.” “It’s all on the software I promise you” he replied .
I though ok I ‘ll check the software. Upon returning home I thought I’ll check my product on the internet only to find that the retail price for this model was $100 cheaper. I was furious not only did they lie to me and tell me that the camera has all the functions that I wanted but they slapped another $100 on the price. I immediately called them and said that I was not happy with the product and I would like a full refund. This was not going to happen and after a few seconds I was getting a completely different attitude from these guy’s it was disgusting.
I am currently I dispute with my credit card company as I will try every thing in my power to make sure this lying unprofessional company does not get my hard earned honest money and just want to warn anyone who goes there that they will get robbed, lied too and sold a lemon. I am not surprised when I see so many complaints about them. They are Scum and should not be allowed to trade. Don’t be the next victim please !!
Camera Zone Saved My Trip ... – This place is awesome. I went in because I stupidly forgot to charge my camera before I came to San Francisco for the day so I thought I might as well just buy a charger while I'm here.
Best Buy... the corporation that I originally purchased my Canon SLR from... didn't have the battery or the charger in stock at all- what a waste- so we found it at Camera Zone and it definitely delivered for only $25! Very decent.
I was overwhelmed by the amount REAL photography merchandise they had, I'd like to go back to check them all out in more detail next time. But getting my charger was so fast and efficient.
Best camera store ever and more. All the staff is super knowledgeable. They've never tried to up-sell or cross-sell me. They don't make any commissions, so there is no pressure to buy. Just genuine help. These guys/girls will even help you do something that won't benefit their sales. They taught me how to use my DSLR better in low-light settings. This place was yet another reason why I am happy to be in San Francisco.
I´ve been cheated!! – Last week, while visiting town, I entered the store asking for a Cannon p 90, the owner showed it to me along with different brands and models. One in particular interested me ( my mistake is not knowing to much about gear and prices), a Nikon coolpix L 110. He convinced me it was the best deal. Sadly I´ve end up payin 399, for it. Today while registering the product at Nikon i found out that the price sugested is 249, i feel like an idiot. This is a mistake I will not make twice.

FRAUDULENT – I went into the store to look at cameras and lenses. The owner, Andre, looked at my camera and said he, as an authorized Sony retailer, had the correct lens for me. What came in the box was not a Sony lens, which I did not notice at the time. I had been looking at the lenses online, and he gave me the same price that I had seen online, $160. When I took the lens back to my hotel room to inspect it, I realized it was not the Sony lens I had been looking for, but a much less valuable lens selling online for only $99. Strike one. Tourist shops usually mark up prices, so this wasn’t too surprising, but I was irritated. Then the lens wouldn’t attach to my camera. Strike two.
I went into the store with another person, who bought a Cannon xsi camera that he had been looking into buying. The box said xsi, the warranty card said xsi, but when we got back to the hotel room and opened the box, the camera was only an xs, MSRP $550 (according to Cannon’s website). He paid $599, which would have been a fair price for the xsi model, but was too much for the xs. Strike three, so we decided to go back to the store.
We went back to the Camera Zone and Art Gallery the next day to confront Andre and request that these issues be resolved. Andre argued that he did not sell my friend an xsi, that he only sold him an xs. We asked why our receipt then said “Cannon xsi” on it? After a great deal of arguing, the shop owner, Andre, gave us the box and paperwork for the xs camera, ripping my friend off a great deal by doing so. We had little choice in the matter. The receipt signed said “no refunds.”
When I inquired about the lack of compatibility between my camera and the lens he sold me, he looked at my camera again and gave me a missing adapter ring. Bower Adapter Ring, MSRP $9, this store CHARGES $49 FOR IT!! Thinking my problems had now been solved, though still bitter about paying $160 for a knock-off lens worth only $99, we left for home. Now that I am home, I have assembled my camera with the wide angle lens, only to find that it is not compatible with my camera after-all.
The receipt says NO RETURNS. I say.. DON'T BUY IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Absolute Pleasure Doing Business – This place is a utopia for anyone interested in photography. It's a nice spacious store with practically anything and everything you could ever dream of related to photography and electronics. I came to this store to buy a bunch of stuff for my wedding gig and was surprised at how accessible the staff was. At the same time, know what you want to buy -- I had a list of all the supplies I needed, so all I had to deliberate on what the quantity of items I wanted to buy. If you don't, you'll be in the store forever, drooling over every item you come across.
Candy Store for Photographers – Camera Zone is my father's mecca. He is obsessed with the store, which is huge and filled with every photo-video-electronic related items you can imagine, and at pretty decent prices. He's like a little boy in a toy store.
When we first came to Camera Zone together, we were turned on by the availability and selection. We also noticed that they were a family owned business and that they were an AUTHORIZED dealer for all of the photo & electronic companies, which is super important to us.
The staff had remarkably knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, they go the extra mile to find you precisely what you're looking for.
This is definitely the place to go for knowledgeable and competent service. While prices for the items are mre than fair, at least you aren't getting ripped off like other stores we found out in the vacinity. If anything, its worth it to go for the advice. but if you're more interested in saving money that's the way to go.
Overpriced Junk – I am an amateur photographer, so I came here for advice when purchasing photo equipment. I was looking for a filter and memory card and was sold items that I was told were 'the best' available. I took the people at the store on their word and purchased the recommended items.
Afterwards I found that the items were misrepresented and that the items purchased were overpriced (I paid $79 and found them readily online for less than $20) and also of the very lowest quality available. I returned the items and the people working at the store got very angry, yelling and screaming at me for being a 'bad customer.' They refunded my money but I did have to listen to a rant that went on for about 5 minutes about how San Francisco customers were not the kind of people he wanted in his store, that only tourists were good customers.
A big box store in SF had better quality items that were competitively priced and I ended up getting what I needed for about $30, without being yelled at or mislead. I like going to local stores whenever I can, even if the price is a little higher, but this place should be avoided at all costs.
