THE WORST PLACE – Worst place to rent a bike! go to BLAZING SADDLES

I worked there for 4 years and i know the owner treats it's employees and costumers. they ASK people like me to come here and give them GOOD REVIEWS! (this is mine)

[1] example: if you get you bike stolen they will charge you 3-5X the retail price of the bike, and they will charge your card without your consent.

.[2] example: if you get insurance, in the contract says that it cover all kind damages, IT DOES NOT!!! they will charge you for the broken parts and they will charge you much more than think! save yourself the trouble and rent from someone else.

this is a reminder of who worked there for many years and know exactly how the "greed" works over there!

and by the way they put their "friend$" to make GOOD REVIEWS in all this websites!

Good Time, Great Exercise – Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to San Francisco - I can't imagine there is a better way to see the Golden Gate Bridge (and all the views).

My friend and I rented mountain bikes which were in good shape and we were NOT looking forward to the exercise... we were on vacation, right? But, we had heard that this was a great way to really experience the city/bridge as opposed to taking a high priced bus tour.

We don't ride often but the staff at the shop helped us refresh our memories about the gears and they gave us good directions and a map. It helped that there were a lot of bikers that day too (pretty much a follow-the-leader situation). Plus, there were only a couple of hills along the way (which we walked).

Once we crossed the bridge and rode into Sausalito, we locked up the bikes and had lunch. We took the ferry back and rode around the piers before taking our bikes back.

All in all, it was a good time and I would highly recommend the activity to anyone who's looking to do something a little bit different on their vacation. If we can do it (the two laziest people on the planet), then you can too.

An Awesome Experience! – I am a local and have rented a bike to go across the bridge with visiting friends, family, etc., many times. It seems to be what everyone wants to do when they come to visit. Not being an avid bike rider, I only take this trek when I am with tourists.

Having rented at the different bike companies, I have to say that this one is my favorite. The prices are all comparable between the companies, but this location seems to have a bit of an edge when it comes to customer service. Their staff is very helpful and I have never had an issue. They can tell when people (like me and my friends) are not avid riders and they make sure everyone knows how to use the gears, where to go, etc.

I would recommend this activity to everyone. The only advice I could give is to go early in the day. The later it gets, the more riders there are.

Dishonest – The employees are friendly, but sales and marketing are a dishonest. They spam Craigslist almost daily trying to get rid of the old beater rentals at their bike store at a cost they claim is "below wholesale." I went to take a look, and they tried to sell some nasty torn-up hybrid bikes on me. Yes, they were nasty as they come--scratches on the frames, ripped saddles, worn grips, and componentry you couldn't identify because the lettering had worn off. And the salesperson tried to tell me the bikes were good as new!

If you're looking to buy a cheap bicycle, go to another bike shop. Just about any other place but here would be better for the price.

Great Bikes and Good Service – I reserved a bike online and received a 10% discount. The bike (a Giant OCR) had quite a few miles on it, but was well-maintained and adjusted properly. I did the ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and took the ferry back. It was a great day with wonderful weather. I even got to see San Francisco in full "protest mode" as today was the day of the Olympic Torch Run. It was quite a scene outside the Ferry Building and up the Embarcadero.

The shop employees were friendly and efficient. They only tried to upsell me on the insurance ($10 on a $40 rental? I don't think so), but they didn't do the hard-sell treatment.

Overall, it was a great experience. I'll do it again the next time I'm in San Francisco.

We had a great time and they did not charge us for our lost key – I can honestly say I have been to both bike rentals in the city and the last poster had a unique experience. I went to Bay City Bike after renting from Blazing Saddles previously, as Blazing Saddles members had been very aggressive to the point of being rude. I tried Bay City Bike and it was a very different environment. They were very nice and helpful with my inlaws and me. My wife's father lost his key as well and there were no charges for that. I believe the other poster had a bad experience and merely encountered a bad employee. I too have a small business and bad employees do happen. No need to run the business into the ground. Bay City Bike was highly professsional and the employees who assisted us were well trained. This is definitely where I will take my future out of town guests to rent a bike.

Terrible customer service – If there is one thing you get out of this long review, please remember this - never do business with Bay City Bike!

The ( five dollar) lock they gave me wasn't working well, and the second time I tried to use it, the key broke in the lock. After 5 hours of bike-riding and a ferry ride, we went to return our bikes at the Taylor St. location. I kindly explained to the employee that the lock's key had broken when I used it, but he said we would have to pay $15 for the key (for a lock that probably only cost 1/3 of that) because it wasn't included in the rental insurance (which I had gotten). I asked the employee if I could read over the contract, and he quickly showed it to me. When I asked to see it again to actually read it, he refused. Then I asked for a copy (of a contract to which I was a signing party), he refused. He said the only way I could get a copy was if I called the cops. I asked the employee for his name so I could contact the manager the next day to explain the situation, and of course, the discourteous man refused again. I asked for a receipt for having returned the bike and for the charges, and (surprise, surprise) he refused. Out of disgust, I left the establishment because I understood there was no way of communicating with this man who obviously had no training in customer and business relations. Furthermore, when I came home and read over their brochure again, I saw that they have written "Helmets/Locks FREE - no hidden charges." Hmm...that's a load of BS.

I strongly advise you to take your business to Blazing Saddles or another company. It was a testament to the good reputation of these other companies that our bikes were so easy to find amongst the 100+ rental bikes when we exited the ferry - EVERYONE else had already figured out how terrible Bay City Bike is.

Best time on a bike in years – I just did the ride over the bridge last weekend with my cousin. These guys were incredibly helpful. They showed us the map and then went over it again because we weren't really listenging at first. After a while we were kind of worried it would be hard since there was so much to get- their bike map is very detailed. But we got nice mountain bikes and started riding and got all the way to Mill Valley. My cousin has lived here over ten years and never gone to the places the girl at Bay City Bike recommneded. It was really incredible riding a bike across the bridge. We got some good photos, and ate good Italian in Sausalito. It was just a great day. I remember the bike place in Hawaii my parents took us when we were kids. It was such a dump and this place is really nice and clean, the bikes were new and all the people that worked there were very cool and friendly (not snobby). Everything that day was kind of easy. I just moved here so when my friends from Chicago come to stay we'll definitely go back and rent bikes from these guys.

Be sure to bring a patch kit on your ride – A friend and I were looking forward to biking over the Golden Gate and touring through Golden Gate Park. We didn't quite get through it all. My friend got a flat tire along the way. Though it is not unreasonable to expect to have a flat when riding a bike, what we found when we patched it up was very disappointing. The tire was so thin that fibers were showing - you could actually see light through it.. The flat was caused by the inner tube contacting the road than by a nail or other sharp object. We actually had to patch the tire as well as the tube fearing that we'd get another flat along the way. Instead of continuing on our route, we decided to return the bike so that we weren't stuck miles away with another flat. Upon returning the bike, the repair guy (with a heavy German? accent) got very defensive and actually tried to explain that this shop purchases tires this way and went on to want to show us new tires in the same condition. All we were looking for was a little understanding - some empathy - but all we got was attitude and defensiveness. Even though we paid for a whole day, the shop didn't even attempt to redeem us for the hours unused even though it was their faulty tires that forced us to cut our trip short. This bike shop was good in insuring that we had a patch kit - it's a good thing since they also need to include extra patches.

Tries to take advantage of tourists – Recently, several members of my family rented bikes from Bay City to ride to Sausalito. The seat adjustment on one of the bikes gave out just as we were at the GG Bridge. This made it impossible to set the seat at the correct level, and the bike was very difficult to ride, especially since we were pulling an infant in a bike trailer. Given that we were part of a large group, we elected to proceed (slowly) to Sausalito. When we returned to the shop via the ferry, we showed the broken part on the bike and asked for a discount on the rental of that bike. The store refused, asserting that we should have discovered prior to leaving the shop that the part was about to give out. Nonsense! It was the shop's responsibility to give us equipment in working order.

Unfortunately, Bay City displayed an attitude all too common with businesses that cater mainly to tourists. However, some of our group are locals, and we will never rent from this business again. I recommend taking your money elsewhere!
