From African headdresses to a Greco-Roman Torso, a wide range of global art awaits you at Tennessee's oldest and largest art museum. – The Scene
Tennessee's oldest and largest museum dates back to 1916 and is nestled within lush Overton Park. The Beaux-Arts style building has expanded several times over the years, but the original structure is a U.S. National Landmark. The museum's elegant restaurant, The Brushmark, has wine and lunch entrees and a view of the park. The gift shop in the main lobby sells cards, posters, books, toys and other artsy mementos.
Decorative paintings, prints, sculpture and other forms of art from around the world are presented on the museum's several (elevator-accessible) floors. The permanent collection holds works by Georgia O'Keefe, Auguste Rodin, Anthony Van Dyke, Honore Daumier and Carl Gutherz. The Brooks hosts lectures, concerts, films and family activities. A must-visit is the children's gallery, where kids are encouraged to touch and explore the artwork.
Memphis has Class – A very nice place to view artwork....on the cutting edge for a town not known for its art community ...I enjoyed it very much and so will you
